OMG it was a hoot. Pretty much made my day.
Some young paid (I asked) donation solicitor called asking if I would listen to a 1 minute message from Mr. Thompson and then answer a few questions. Naturally, I was pleased to comply.
Fred was oozing southern charm talking about how he believes America is headed in the wrong direction. He spoke of how he had given up on politics and that's why he left the Senate and politics behind "in the rear view mirror for good", or so he thought. However, he's been so moved and honored by the people seeking to elect him he simply couldn't say no.
Then the young man comes back on the phone and asked me if I agree with Fred Thompson that America is headed in the wrong direction. I replied in the affirmative. He then told me that Fred would like me to become an "honorary member of his campaign" and send me a bumper sticker for a donation of $100 or $200.
Our conversation lasted about 15 minutes. I informed that nice young man that my time and disposable income was being spent campaigning for Ron Paul. He tried to convince me I should support Fred because he shares Ron Paul's (an excellent candidate he said) federalist views. He claims Dr. Paul can't win but Fred can. I told him I share Ron Paul's foreign policy views and he told me Fred Thompson didn't want to "cut & run" from Iraq. Needless to say I educated that nice young man.
We spoke a bit about the other candidates and how very likely it is Hillary will be our next President if Rudy wins, and how insulting their behavior towards Dr. Paul has been. He agreed it is juvenile and makes them look bad. I told him I hadn't heard Mr. Thompson laugh or poke fun at Dr. Paul and he told me Fred was a victim of that sort of thing too.
We ended our conversation cordially, with him thanking me for my time after making note (or so he said) and promising to pass along my message to the former Senator that he throw his support behind Congressman Paul because he's the best candidate for the job and the best hope for our nation.
