I was driven by heat to barbecue fever as the Lantner Quartet arrived to perform at the gallery.
I do 'slob chic' barbecue. Among the rules are you have to get results with cheap crap utensils from china and a small wretched grill. None o that williams sonoma crap, good knives or fancy high tech gas cooking monstrosity.
The centerpiece is always boneless country ribs which get some sort of spice rub for searing. Then there are skewers of shrimp in an 'elevated' teriyaki sauce,(add fresh garlic and ginger to a cheap store bought sauce). There are usually sweet Italian sausages as is, sirloin tips marinated in Italian salad dressing, Burgers and dogs, and whatever other stuff I dream up.
I learned texas flank steak from an actual tejano I met in Seattle. I got a load of potato salad, black olive tapanade, baguettes, manchego, stilton, brie and extra sharp chedder and so on. Beverages usually involve beer and wine. A good chilled vinho verde rocks.
Then you set it up so the barbecue aroma wafts into the performance area for an olifactory boost to sonic stuff.
At it again today.
