DENISE GUREN
Long time member of the local folk music and folk
dance community, Denise Guren died Sunday evening May 31, at 5:10 PM. It
happened very fast. I saw her Saturday afternoon, walking through the farmers
market, and on Sunday, she collapsed and died, very suddenly. She's been
fighting for her life for years, and made a really good run at it. I've known
Denise since we were teenagers. I think it's not how long the story is, but how
well it's told. She told it well.
Her funeral will be tomorrow morning,
Wednesday, June 3rd at The Meadow at Green Acres in Ferndale at 11 AM. They
chose Green Acres because it's the one local place with natural burial
available.

LAUREL BLISS &
CLIFFORD PERRY
Sunday afternoon, June 7th, 2 PM at Nancy's Farm
This is a
CD Release Concert for their brand new album, "Spirit of Love." It's American
Roots Music at it's finest from two deeply rooted singers who are also fine
instrumentalists on guitar, dobro & fiddle. Cliff's guitar and Laurel's
resonator guitar blend together as beautifully as their voices. Their first CD,
Old Pal, remains one of the most beautiful in my collection. Don't miss this!
I can't wait....

PIPELINE EXPLOSION
COMMEMORATIVE
A week from tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10, marks the 10th
anniversary of the pipeline explosion at Whatcom Falls. There are a variety of
commemorative activities planned, including a walk through the explosion site at
3:30 PM, and a gathering at Maritime Heritage Park at the mouth of Whatcom Creek
just below the museum at 6 PM. I just posted a song I wrote at the time of the
explosion at flip.breskin.com, because it still feels true ten years later. You
can find out more about Bellingham's day of remembrance here:

Annabelle Chvostek, a singer-songwriter from
Montreal, is a former member of the Wailin..' Jennys, a band that won several
Juno Awards for their album Firecracker, which featured four of Annabelle's
songs, and built quite a buzz during her tenure, touring internationally,
playing festivals, and appearing frequently on Prairie Home Companion.
Annabelle has released a solo album, Resilience, recorded in New York and
Montreal with Grammy-nominated Canadian record producer Roma Baran (Laurie
Anderson, Rosalie Sorrels, Penny Lang, Kate & Anna McGarrigle). The album
features Bruce Cockburn, Mary Gauthier, Michael Jerome Browne, Julie Wolf (Ani
DiFranco..'s keyboard player), and a slew of other great players. It's getting
rave reviews so far. Her web site is
www.annabelle.org.
Myshkin is a stunning songwriter
and singer with a very unique style. Her songs have a dark and subtle wit, raw
honesty, a painter’s eye, and incorporate far-flung musical ideas with a
passionate ease. She creates an uncommonly timeless modern music with flavors
from tango to electronica, old time to folk to jazz. Her band Myshkin’s Ruby
Warblers was born in New Orleans, where she was based for nine years before
moving to Portland, Oregon in 2002. Last year she moved down to the woods of
Southern Oregon to build a cob house/studio and work on a new album.
