Do you guys still respect the Oscars or awards shows? Im not sure I am anymore. The choices are terrible, winners or losers. Best actors and actress...best pictures...any movies u think is overlooked?

I think the aviator is the biggest load of shit ever created. It is a big money electronic masturbation. What a waste of three hours of my day, film, and effort. As I see it only Ray and Sideways are worthy enough to earn the merit of Best Picture

I like your first sentence, just take out the last 2 words.  He is everywhere, and he isn't consistently good.  He is brillliant in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" though.

I don't really pay attention to award shows in general...as stated above there are definatley movies that are overlooked and it would be crazy to even to start making a list because there are way too many films out there to just cut down into (what is it?) 5 nominees? Some of my favorite films aren't huge blockbusters nor did they have giant corporate machines behind them..

Just to throw something out here...Donnie Darko>>direct to home theater has a HUGE cult following. I'm going out on a limb here and sayin that it wasn't recognised, and you know what..it doesn't matter! If you put the fans of that film on the opposite end of a scale as Aviator fans and weighed out the sheer enjoyment and love produced..which way do you think the scales would tip. I'm not saying Donnie Darko should have won a Best Film award, I'm just saying that there's a difference in the fan following..and that's what film making is all about..

You'll never see Evil Dead getting props from Oscar, but the fans will follow that film to the grave..no pun intended.
On a related note..WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE TAKE SPIDERMAN AWAY FROM THAT MAN RAIMI'S HANDS!!!
HOLY SH*T!! I'm just glad Batman Begins is out there, man, i really am!

I do respect the choices even if I do not agree with some (esp. when there is a lot of talent to choose from).  I view them more wholisitcally, globally, and evolutionarily.  They have come a long way and many of the alcalades were down to earth and simple thanks to the people that matter most: Family, friends and humanity. Some touched the core of my being and grabbed my heart out of my chest. I notice the positive down to earth rise above mediocrity inspite of just being a human.  Just remember, you can catch more flies with honey than you can vinegar.  Please keep striving to attain you own dreams. I am grateful for the last image of those who have gone before us: Richard Pryor.  And I thanked God that but for His Grace I do not have Lou Gherig's disease. And Richard handled it with grace that I'm nort sure I would have.  Sincerely submitted per question posed.

Martin Scorcese is overlooked, but The Oscars are awards given to the studios by the studios.  The films chosen usually are the ones they choose to market for that year.  It is all a big marketing ploy with the best movies either losing or (more likely) not even getting nominated.  If you want to see a great award show, travel to France to see the Cannes.  Go to Slamdance.  Go to Toronto International Film Festival.

These award shows are nothing but ADVERTISING.  Are you being bought?

I can see I'm not cynical enough to be here, but I do have to say: As far as best picture goes, I've looked at a list of winners for all they years there have been oscars, and I have to say that most of them are very good movies, even in recent years.
