Current mood:  jedi

"Mistress, Reptile Mistress! may already be familiar to some, having been previously sold as a CD-R exclusively at United Fruit's shows. However, this fully mastered version - released on She Said Records, a fledgling new Glasgow-based independent, and featuring previous single Shake as a bonus track - is a must for current fans and curious ears alike, with all five tracks serving as the perfect introduction to one of Glasgow's most exciting new acts. From the frantic smashing of drums on opener Push it, to the grooving experimentation of Final Test, this EP bears an intelligence and glaring rawness which challenges rock convention, yet is short and powerful enough to catch your attention and crawl under your skin. Inspired by the experimental stylings of Sonic Youth and Shellac, while remaining refreshingly original, this is an effort worth investigating."

"United Fruit are a dynamic, assertive and thunderous quartet. They are neither insular nor malnourished in sound. United Fruit will leave you almost hot-headed after every song you listen to.

The ‘Mistress, Reptile, Mistress!’ EP is something quite significant. Glasgow is producing some of it’s most exciting music to date and this EP pulls the trigger and fires United Fruit into the core of it.

The initial track ‘Push It’ wields an antagonistic streak, it may not sound melodic to some in birth however, as the track progresses it produces an addictive attitude of fury that you just want to live repeatedly. The melodies become apparent through a masterfully played guitar and I found myself skipping back sections to listen to with hunger.

‘Shake’ will always be the track that lifts me with excitement. It has a lusty prowess but manages to throw out sonic licks. It builds several furious guitar blowouts and drums of bloodied turmoil. It’s vocals are produced by a man with control over the fire in his chest and the passion in his veins. It is gloriously fervid.

From start to finish this EP delivers. It is a cavalcade of massive percussion and desperate shredding guitars. I cannot fault this in any sense and my only regret is that I cannot listen to it more than I already have. United Fruit have produced an EP that has sewn seeds of their potential and it is going to grow into something of epic yet effortless proportions."

"Rather urgently abrasive five track EP from this immediate Glasgow four piece. Tightly wound jagged guitars and new wave post hardcore angular hardcore noise-rock goodness that bites down hard.. .Reptile Mistress indeed, a demanding sound, a wired sound, all creeping in from different angles and gooseberries jarring with blackberries and lemons and bananas and experimental visceral intensity and we like this lots... all discordant and jagged and nagging at your head to eat your oranges and your Fugazi and your Shellac and your Mclusky and... yes... go grab your united fruit, five a day needed, obey your mistress, strenght of character."

"United Fruit are one of a bunch of weird, heavy-ish rock bands currently weirding out Glasgow, alongside No Kilter, Ex Wives , Holy Mountain and Bronto Skylift, who they've done a split 7" with. This is the first EP from the four-piece, although you could previously get your hands on it as CD-R at their highly talked about shows.

It might be brief - less than 20 minutes - but 'Mistress, Reptile Mistress!' manages to hit all the usual alt. rock touchstones (Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Shellac, Mclusky) and offers hints that United Fruit could eventually break away from them, such as on the catchy grunge of 'Shake' or in the heavy, groovy breakdowns on 'Push It' and 'Track The Hunt' - bringing some new vigour to the buzzed out, disc(h)ordant punk rock.

Back-to-back, 'Final Test's' slower, sludgier sound and 'Future Law's' primitive hardcore show more contrasts, and what fun United Fruit must be when they bust out live."
