Delta Groove Press Release: Sean Costello 1979 - 2008

It is with the deepest sadness that we issue this press release, and the news that Delta Groove recording artist Sean Costello passed away in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, April 15th, one day before his 29th birthday. Sean was not only a member of the Delta Groove musical family, he was also a friend, and words cannot express the sorrow we feel at having to say goodbye so soon. As blues music fans, we unfortunately grow somewhat accustomed to the sadness of the inevitable passing of musical elders after long and fruitful careers. Losing someone as young, vibrant, and talented as Sean, who had accomplished so much in just a few short years and still had so much potential, is a terribly difficult blow, not only to those who knew him personally, but for the music community as a whole. He had been unanimously praised as one of the main torch-bearers of the blues flame for the coming generations, and now that potential will go sadly unfulfilled.

Costello was born in Philadelphia in 1979, moved with his family to Atlanta at the age of 9, and soon afterward picked up the guitar. Within a few short years he'd won the Memphis Blues Society's new talent award, and was on the road with his own band. At age 17 he released his first album, "Call The Cops", acclaimed by Real Blues Magazine as "an explosive debut." He soon joined forces with fellow blues guitarist Susan Tedeschi, with whom he toured and recorded, laying down tasteful lead guitar work on her Gold-certified Tone-Cool debut "Just Won't Burn".

In 2000, Costello released "Cuttin' In" on Landslide Records, which earned him critical acclaim as well as a prestigious W. C. Handy Award nomination for 'Best New Artist Debut.' With 2002's "Moanin' For Molasses", also on Landslide, came a Blues Revue cover story touting Costello as "the top contender to be the next blues star - and soon." Costello's hometown paper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called his guitar playing "masterful" and of "remarkable maturity." The paper also compared him to such legends as B. B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

In 2005, his self-titled fourth CD "Sean Costello" was released by Artemis Records. Produced by Steve Rosenthal (The Rolling Stones, Suzanne Vega, Freedy Johnston), it was an appealing blend of soul, funk, upbeat rock. He was joined by some very special guests: Levon Helm of The Band sits in on two tracks, as does his daughter, Amy Helm, with her group, Ollabelle. Steve Jordan, Willie Weeks and the Conan O'Brien horn section also appear.

Sean's Delta Groove debut CD "We Can Get Together", just released in February, was produced by Costello himself. He was justly proud of "We Can Get Together", calling it the best work he'd ever done, and the critics agreed, with excellent reviews from radio and press alike lauding it his most impressive and mature work to date.

Costello was fortunate enough to earn the respect and admiration of many of his own idols, and had the opportunity to perform with his mentors. He shared stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Pinetop Perkins, and Bo Diddley among many others. He recently said, "All I've ever wanted to do was play the guitar well. I've been fortunate to be able to make a living doing it, and I plan to keep it up for the rest of my life."

Rand Chortkoff and Robert Fitzpatrick, the CEO and President respectively of Delta Groove Music, issued the following joint statement: "Sean Costello was a genius. He was destined to go down in music history as a blues legend. His musical legacy will live on through his music forever. We at Delta Groove Music and all his fans everywhere are devastated by the untimely news of his death. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends and to all of his many fans around the world. He will not be forgotten."

Here here.

Sean had the ability to convey so much emotion in his singing and guitar playing. He was one of the very few who set the benchmark for the new breed of blues musicians.

It is a tough pill to swallow, we're all feeling the loss.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of this young man. I went to school with him and even before that saw him play when we were both about 16 at a little bookstore coffee shop in Decatur on n. Decatur Road(no longer there). I remember thinking what a special kid. He was saving for a car so he could get to gigs. I am his age. So sad when someone leaves us before they really get a chance to live. So sorry for his family. You're in my prayers.

I remember the first time I heard Sean Costello's guitar playing...it was in 1993, and I was in the 7th grade. My entire class was taken outside for what we were told was a "very special presentation." Almost immediately, Sean and his young band (he was only in 8th grade) ripped into a roaring (it seemed that way when I was younger at least) rendition of Purple Haze. It took a while for me to hear him again. Once I started hosting a blues radio show, I quickly picked up some of Sean's CDs and let his music fly over the airwaves. At least I've still got those CDs...

I was starting to think the last leaf had been turned over in the blues quite along time ago. Then I heard Sean Costello. It is hard to compare his passion and playing to any other artist. It was truly unique and beautiful.

Immense love and prayers,
Jeremy

My lady Joy and I were lucky enough to catch Sean live on a few occasions and he was a fine singer and guitarist. We also got to know him a little and he was a good guy. Joy had a special affinity for Sean and she talked me into going to see Sean a few months ago for one last time. I am so glad we did. Rest in Peace Sean I hope you are jamming with some of the greats in the hereafter.

I saw Sean perform less than two weeks ago with The Last Waltz Ensemble. He came up for a few songs and was having a blast. All smiles. That's exactly how I will remember him. RIP Sean.

My son, Ian Harper, started out playing in public when he was 15 and Sean was 13. They were both amazing. They took very different paths with their music, but we always kept up with what he was doing as Sean grew up.

We were devastated to hear of our loss of him.

So here's to you Sean: We loved you.
You will live on in our hearts!

And my son, Ian Harper, wants the family to know that this was very sad news for him. He will always know that Sean was great! A better blues singer and player then he feels he will ever be.
He had his greatest respect for him!

With a heavy heart, my prayers go to Sean's friends and family.

I'm one of the lucky people to have shared a small piece of Sean's life and music, we've been touring together with his band in Europe, and he even invited me on stage on several occasions, a real treat!

Bud, it was a privilige and honor to have known you!
Where ever you are, keep on bluesin'!

Cristy and I loved Sean's music and going to see and hear him play as well as did lots of friends of ours that we shared his talent with.

I once shared a favorite cigar with him at Northside Tavern and Cristy bought him more than a couple shots over the years at Chip's.

Sean, why did you have to leave us this soon!

Taking this day to remember Sean, thinking of his family, friends and legacy. A fine young man who made a mark carrying fine musical traditions forward - gaining new ears along the way. I only saw Sean play live once in Atlanta - made sure to remember his name - look him up - and have kept him bookmarked close ever since. With love and admiration - Brent.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of this great musical talent. I met him in Kansas City about 5 years ago when we were playing on the same bill. I was absolutely floored by the his soulfulness and musical maturity. He was blessed with natural talent. My deepest sympathies to all family and loved ones near him.

Wednesday morning I recognized Sean's music on RFG and I turned up the volume. Then the announcer credited "the late Sean Costello". Shocked dumb. When I listened today to "Call The Cops", tears came to my eyes. Sean had been chosen by the spirits to be a bearer of the blues torch and with it he lit the way for us, lovers of this art that reaches into our hearts.
Here's my comfort, Sean: you're jamming with your heroes now!

"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intellingent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have succeeded.
" -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sean was a success by any measure. He brought joy to all who were blessed enough to hear him. I'm honored to have met him and been able to see him perform several times. We were planning to see him again on May 8th at Knuckleheads in KC. It is hard to believe that this world is now without him, his talent and his smile.

We say prayers for all his family, friends and fellow musicians during this time and all the days ahead. Life is so short - seize the precious moments you are given. God Bless.

Peace ~ Molly

Monday, April 21st I will be airing a tribute show that I never imagined I'd be putting together. Sean was one of the early interviews I conducted for my radio show, Blue Horizon on Aspen Public Radio. He was such a pleasure to talk to and a gregarious, down-to-earth guy. Upon hearing the news of his passing, my first reaction was disbelief, then shock followed by deep sadness. Not only was Sean an increadible talent on guitar with soulful delivery beyond his years, he was one of the good guys. For the podcast, to be uploaded April 22nd, go to www. kajx. org. I will be rebroadcasting the interview as part of the tribute show. Sean will be greatly missed.

To Sean's family, friends and fans. I had the chance to work with Sean on many gigs, as the audio engineer, and he was one of my fav's to work with. He had such great musical talents, vocals and guitar, that I considered him one of the best in the business. He was such a good friend also, I am very sad to hear of his untimely death.
To those that read this, Sean will always be in my heart, thoughts and prayers! We will miss you Sean!!

What a tragic loss for everyone. Sean was due to open here in Cincinnati at the blues festival. I was blessed to have met him in Atlanta several years ago and he was just so amazing. He laid down some of the cruelest blues music I had heard in a long time. Even playing one of Jimmie Vaughan's songs and making it his own. I am so saddened by this. My prayers go out to all who knew him but, especially his family. The Lord takes those who have done all that He asked them to do.
He is flying with the Angels now!
