So like, 2001: A Space Odyssey is supposed to be one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. And it is! Stanley Kubrick did a pretty awesome job on this one. But for a movie that's supposed to be so super-futuristic visionary and stuff, he sure got a lotta things wrong about dos double-aught one.

Let's start with HAL, the talkin' super-smart computer...

Nice try, Stan, but eight years ago we were still stuck with Windows Millenium Edition. Not really big in the conversation department. Not very smart, either. And although Windows may not've killed many Astronauts, ME sure did a good job at turnin' a perfectly good computer into a useless piece of space junk - whenever it worked, that is. No, the only HAL we got in 2001 was Shallow Hal, and we all know how much that movie sucked.

And talk about space junk, 2001's got all these saucy spaceships kinda just floatin' around to Johann Strauss. Okay, yeah, tee hee, I get it - it's supposed to be like this fancy dancey waltzy-waltz out there in space. Great. But where's the David Bowie soundtrack? Zarathustra can sprach all he wants to, but I want my Major Tom! Floatin' in a tin can, if you know what I mean.

And finally we got this scene with a bunch of hairy monkey people worshippin' a giant videocassette. Are you kiddin' me? VHS is so not used anymore. It's all about Blu-ray nowadays. Please.

And what's with all them hairy monkey people in the first place? So what, everybody was supposed to turn into a monkey to start off the New Millennium? Yeah, right. Like that ever happened. Hang on a sec - I gotta take this. Hello? This is the year 2001 calling. Guess what? No monkey people. C'mon, Stanley! Is this the best you can do after teachin' us how to love the bomb? This is such a lame rip-off from Planet of the Apes! You should be ashamed of yourself.

I wonder what 2010 will be like? Guess I'll just have to wait and see!

George Orwell blew it with 1984..  No mention of "Karma Chameleon", "Ghostbusters", "The A-Team".  What the heck was he thinking?  Stick to writing about talking animals, fella!

No, 2001 can't be a documentary. There's no Geraldo Rivera voice-over narration in it.

Luckily to me i never watched Geraldo so this conversation is over due to the lack of bad culture mutual base.

Also I want to remind you that i love you with all my heart. <♥> <♥>

Back in prehistoric pre-internet times computers were perceived as these monsterous anti-human oppressive things. There's even an anti-computer Dragnet episode, with punch cards and all the trimmin's.
If you want a great David Bowie soundtrack, check out Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" which is not a great movie overall, but the father/son plot of Bill Murray and Owen Wilson is really superb -- and except for a couple minutes of the guitar from 'Queen Bitch' near the end, David Bowie isn't even on the soundtrack, but a whole bunch of his songs are, as sung with Portuguese lyrics by someone named Seu Jorge.
And it's easy to tell that Wes Anderson really knows the extensive David Bowie catalog, because at the key central moment of the movie sings one of my extreme favorite Bowie songs, "When I Live My Dream"
If you don't know this masterpiece, here's Bowie himself singin' it, from 1966 or so.
(Till Saturday by the fountain at the L.A. Music Center. Tee Hee!)
But what I'm gettin' at is that what's important about the 2001 soundtrack is that it made the world much more familiar with Gyorgy Ligeti (who was the greatest livin' composer until he died in 2006) and whose music gives 2001 most of its style and mood.
I was lucky enough to see an all-Ligeti concert at that very same L.A. Music Center, and he was there! He was like a little kid who got so excited at hearin' several pieces of his music played that he would run up to the stage after every piece and hug all the orchestra members. He was awesome!

Yeah, the soundtrack for 2001 is pretty good, Ziggy Stardust or not. Back in the days of MIDIs (remember those?) I used to have one of Also Sprach Zarathustra...

zarathustra.mid

The Blue Danube is one of my favorite pieces, ever. I used to have a MIDI of that, too!

danube.mid

Of course now in the post-2001 Apocalypse we're livin' in, MIDI files are like the dinosaurs of the audio world. Nobody uses 'em any more. But I still like to listen to 'em every once in awhile : ) They have a certain 64-bit charm, if you know what I mean.

MIDI is still very cool.

My dad's last job before he retired was monitorin' space junk for TRW in Manhattan Beach.

Johann Strauss (waltz king) and Richard Strauss (who also wrote some waltzes but who is known for all this heavy orchestra stuff (includin' Zarathustra) and fifteen operas. The tinkly sounds in the orchstra here always give me a major buzz - and they dress just like Alessandra!

HAL

Hey Cupid, I’m glad we never got any HALs in 2001 (the year, not the movie, cause it had one, like you already said).  That unit was a maniacal little bugger and I wouldn’t want my laptop plotting my demise!  A cool thing to do is go one letter forward in the alphabet with each letter in HAL, although both Arthur C Clarke and Kubrick said this has nothing to do with the name.

This is from Jennifer, but she's too lazy to send it right now. But she's naggy enough to tell me how to write that. I wanted to write: "This is from Jennifer. But she's too lazy to send it right now." But then she told me I shouldn't start a sentence with but. But I don't care. Now she's saying I should have put the butt in quotes. As in you shouldn't start a sentence with "but". Now she thinks I spelled "butt" wrong. Whatever.

We actually came up with the idea of sending this at the same time anyway. She can apparently read my mind, though. Since she thinks she thought of it first. Anyway we'll stop having a lover's tiff on your blog. :)
This is Jennifer now!!! I'm taking this over! Stephen is retarded!!!! :P And I thought of it first!

Hello Ms Club

We used to have a monkey at the petting zoo, and whenever he heard the intro to Also Sprach Zarathrustra, he would fling his poo with the same energy that the monkey guy smacks around that bone.  It came down to either getting rid of the monkey or stop playing Also Sprach Zarathustra.

No more monkey.

2001 was pretty good considering it was 1969.  Thanks also to Arthur C. Clark, don't forget, for the original idea.  Kubrick did a good job.  This was Kubrick's simplistic way of saying a higher power or intelligence came onto Earth to shift the evolution to humanoid ape animals into a more developed human.  Obviously, I don't think it went down with a large 0 domino placed by the Creator in front of the pre-neanderthals.  Mysterious, weird, fine for a cinematic moment but totally unrealistic.

2010 came out in 1984 and for a 10-year-old kid it was an alright sci-fi with Roy Scheider, Yakoff Smirnov, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, and a few other semi-famous actors.  When I saw it again years later I couldn't stop laughing at Roy's ridiculous narration throughout the movie.  I won't spoil for you, you'll see what I mean when you watch it.  There's some other silliness that goes down but you'll have to see it to know what I'm talkin' about.

Hey Kinky

Here is a great Pink Floyd/2001: ASO sync.  Have Echoes (Meddle, 1971) cued and paused.  When Dave shuts down HAL the screen fades to black and a title screen (Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite, I think) appears.  As the title fades, start Echoes.  If the sync is right, the first ping corresponds with the first image of the final scene, or act or whatever.  The Stargate scene, anyway.
