Current mood:  sad
Wow. I’ve been sitting here for nearly an hour, trying to figure out how to start writing this blog. I can truly say that I’m speechless. I simply can’t find the words to express the absolute shock I’ve felt since about 2:30PM yesterday.

The King of Pop is dead.

Over the course of time, many memories fade. But some days will always stand out more than others. And yesterday is going to be one of those days. I will NEVER forget the day Michael Jackson died.

Say what you will about the man, but the fact remains - Jackson will always be one of the most iconic and influential artists in the history of modern music.

Honestly, if you asked me to name my biggest influences as a singer and songwriter, MJ might not even make the list. But the truth is, Michael Jackson absolutely had a major role in my musical development. I grew up listening to the albums Thriller and Bad, watching MJ’s music videos, and singing along to nearly ALL of his songs. Hell, I think I even had a copy of that really cheesy Moonwalker video game for the Sega Genesis. Remember that? Don’t lie, you know you do

During my childhood, Michael Jackson was HUGE. There was truly no bigger star in the world. I remember watching old concert videos, and seeing women pass out right and left at his live shows. He’s on a short list of entertainers that have been known for that, along with Elvis, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. And with good reason - the guy was an absolute phenom on stage. In fact, a quick search on YouTube reveals any number of awesome MJ concert videos, complete with tons of women being carried out on stretchers, lol.

Check this one out. It’s Michael Jackson performing arguably one of his best tunes, the classic “Man in The Mirror”. For extra fun, count the number of girls shown fainting during the song

The bottom line is, Michael Jackson has shaped the lives of every single musician, dancer, singer or songwriter in the modern music world. Without him, the entire boy band/pop scene of the late 90’s would never have occurred. Justin Timberlake, Usher and other artists in that realm wouldn’t even be around. And bands like Maroon 5 would have a totally different sound.

The saddest part about his untimely passing is the fact that Michael Jackson was about to make an incredible come-back. 50 sold-out shows in London. A three-year long world tour. And a Thriller themed casino in Las Vegas. The King of Pop might have finally found the redemption he had been looking for over the last 15 years. But the truth is, as millions mourn his death, no redemption is needed for Michael Jackson. As time marches on, MJ will not be remembered as a circus freak. He’s going to be remembered as one of the most significant driving forces in the history of modern music. And I’m pretty sure that people all over the world will be singing his songs until the end of time.

Rest in peace, Michael. You will always be a true legend. And you will never be forgotten.

To conclude this blog, here’s my personal tribute to the great King of Pop. It’s my own performance/arrangement of Michael Jackson’s great song, “Smooth Criminal”. This video is in no way meant to be opportunistic. The strange truth is, I’ve been working on a version of this song for a couple months, and was planning on putting up on YouTube next week. The Universe can be an awfully strange place sometimes.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video, and that the music of Michael Jackson lives on in your heart... just like I know it will live on in mine :)

what an awesome blog.  I was telling my Mom this afternoon, that her era of music had the King of Soul (James Brown) and the King of Rock N Roll( Elvis Presley). We have Michael Jackson as our Icon our generation of the greatest music that ever lived.  My very first record in those year and CD's were not made at that time was Thriller.  I am and if I can get a copy of the 25th Anniversary Thriller CD I am going to get it.  Thank you for writing this blog.

I like your version of Smooth Criminal. Nice!

I grew up with Michael Jackson's music. One of my elementary school teachers even had us watch "Thriller" when it came out and learn the dance moves. I have fond memories of my childhood whenever I hear MJ's songs. I'm also saddened by this loss.

Nichelle D_Michael Jackson's-THIS IS IT

Beautifully written, Matthew.  And you speak truth.  I do believe that eventually, when all of this crazy dust settles, that Michael will be remembered as you say.  I am still not believing that this Idol, this magnificent soul, who touched the world with his inspiration is no longer with us here on earth.  I may be days, weeks, even months getting beyond Michael's departure; I don't see an end to my heartbreak.  But I will live with Michael's influence shaping my life everyday.  Thank you for your beautiful tribute and your amazing gift of song.

Matthew that was a pretty wonderfully written tribute to Michael Jackson. I've heard so many musicians talk about MJ in the last few days. I know that I loved Michael's music, but as a musician such as yourself, his influence meant so much. He seemed to impact all musicians in one way or another and his sudden death was very devastating to so many people, but especially people in the music world. I've been wondering what Michael would think about the amount of outpouring love and support he's been receiving since he died. I really agree with you about hoping that MJ will be remembered for the wonderful things he did for the music world rather than the choices he made in the last 10-15 years of his life. Focus on the positive! I'm off to youtube to listen to your arrangement of "Smooth Criminal". Oh yeah, Man in the Mirror is one of his best. It's definitely my favorite. :)
Thanks for writing such a great tribute!

The White Lady of Rohan

Not an Michael Jackson fan (I only really liked Thriller and whatever the name of the song he did for the Free Willy movie...I ADORED those movies as a kid and wanted a pet orca. o.O) but I respect him as a musician and he was a damn good dancer. Besides, he influenced Hanson, who are still my all time favorite band. Without him, would there even be a Hanson?

I was pretty bummed because he's the goddamn King of Pop and the King is dead. It's mind boggling because like with Heath, it's so random. You don't see it comingh at all. However, I was holding up until I read your note. It made me cry-and I haven't been upset over a celebrity since Heath. =(

I truly enjoyed your blog, Matt. Moreover, I enjoyed your version of "Smooth Criminal" too. I first heard that song when I was about 6 years old. My brother had the cassette single. Now, 21 years later, I'm still a big fan of his work. But yes, I agree in your video that it's a song not given the attention it's worth.

Nice job on the song, and nice blog. Long live the King.

I didn't have the Moonwalker video game, but I do remember seeing the Thriller video for the first time. I grew up in the height of his solo career and I swear to you it was, without any doubt, the scariest thing I'd ever seen in my life. First I screamed, then I ran out of the room crying my 6 year-old eyes out, haha. I've watched that video several times over the weekend, and it DEFINITELY wasn't child friendly, but OMG, it's so fantasic! Just wanted to share one of my Michael Jackson memories, since you were so kind to share one of yours. The world shares your shock and your grief. This is a horrible tragedy and he will definitely be missed.
