There was a crisp wind in the wake of the Yankee victory today. Way too many people crowded lower Manhattan for the victory parade and I sat on the couch and watched, thankful for choosing the couch and not the masses.
Actually, I was resting up for the Starcode show in Stamford, CT. We have been playing Seaside Tavern for years. The first time we played there, and I hesitate to guess the year, we had to bring our own PA system. Then about a year ago they renovated and put in their own, and tonight, they had a 24 channel board that any mastering house would have been proud of. I am not saying it’s not a great set up, but I am saying it’s overkill for a room about the size of my living room. The sound guy, Jay, was real nice when we arrived, then he went through the obligatory asswipe phase, only to end up the nice and appreciative guy again at the end of the set. I don’t understand sound engineers in clubs at all. I sympathize, but do NOT understand them.
The night started off with bumper to bumper traffic leaving NYC. We got to the venue to find out that we weren’t slated to start our set until 11pm. We had heard 10pm but whatever. We had dinner and sat through the first band. They were also from NYC, not bad, but loud, not their fault at all.
The night was made by all of our friends who came. Kimmie, Lisa and co as well as all of Dan’s posse. The set when off without a hitch, but like I said it was loud, my ears are still ringing as I sit here writing this. The set was good, we did 10 songs, three of the new ones and a mix of the old. Unfortunately, I missed the last band because I had to bail to get home, we did chat with them before they went on, they seemed pretty cool.
It would be nice to make it back to the Seaside Tavern in Stamford, but judging from Jay the sound guys faces and gestures while we were on the stage I’d say that’s a long shot....
Tonight we are back at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn sans Greg. It will be like Starcode as The Police, should be interesting at the very least!!
