So there I was on a Friday morning at Enterprise car hire. Way before my usual breakfast hour and faced with the choice between the KIA economy car, basically a nuclear bubble on what looks like wheels, but you can't be sure, and a Chevy Silverado.

Both not the Mere Mortals car of choice, but a decision was looming and I finally heard myself mumble "I'll have the Silverado" and immediately knew I had made the weirdest and yet correct decision. A social experiment. What were they going to think. Two underfed individuals with guitars piling out of that? All the way up PCH? Let's see what happens.

It's not a very good car . Kind of as stupid as it looks actually. Too slow to be fast, too fat-arsed, to be elegant, too small to be really hard, but nonetheless not bad for the terrain we were facing, the PCH.

So we negotiated some turns, ran our mix CDs to the end, wasted a lot of gas and man did we get some looks from guys in other trucks. We had fun in that thing. Got us all the way to Big Sur where we were opening for Black Francis one last night in the lovely setting of the Henry Miller library.

Did you know that in that place a gig like that immediately qualifies you for free drinks anywhere you go? And a place to sleep? True.
