CD REVIEW - Something worth hearing
by Lisa Schaeffer

On the band’s debut effort, heavy rockers Something To Burn have managed to produce something new and interesting by simply sticking to what has been proven to work time and time again: Good, solid rock.
Even though Something To Burn’s music is heavy at times, the band is a toned-down version of much of what seems to be released these days. It nixed screaming and gloomy vocals and opted for a much more unpolluted sound that will be sure to get the band noticed. Meshing elements of classic rock, punk, heavy rock and metal, Something To Burn have created a noteworthy debut.
“Transitions” is the first for the band on Softdrive Records, which was founded by Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland. Although the band incorporates some of Weiland’s patented grunge style into “Transitions,” Something To Burn has managed to make this album all its own. This is the type of album that you can listen to from start to finish without skipping any tracks due to boredom or dislike. The release starts with “Now & Forever.” Greg Wayne’s vocals will grasp listeners right from the start. There is no doubt that Wayne has a great singing voice that adapts to whatever he is singing. His vocals fit, and the band’s music meshes with each song, even though the band switches up its focus and influences throughout the duration of the album. “Beyond” has a punk-rock feel to it, while “Somebody New” leans more toward metal. However, prior to that on “Below,” the band intros the song with a brief classical-sounding instrumental just before breaking into the aggressive track.
The main thing that makes this band stand out is its diversity. It manages to keep what could be a run-of-the-mill rock album interesting throughout, while making an impact on listeners. Although Something to Burn seems to be all over the place when choosing a genre, it has somehow managed to bring it all together and produce a debut that is cohesive and well worth listening to.
