Current mood:Moving Forward
After pondering on it for approximately two years. I've finally decided to leave my crew STN.

Due to artistic differences and a lingering differences in views, I realized that continually being part of a network that I am more associated with than an actual part of just leads to emotional weariness. The intertwining of lame politics and constant debates over leadership, crew member's and lack of has been more a negative element in my life than a positive. It's just not conducive to the healthy spiritual and "at peace" lifestyle I wish to abide in.

One of the main reasons I am leaving the crew is because I strongly feel that it is no longer within the vision and objective of why the crew was initially formed. When Sine, Doc and I formed the crew - we wanted the crew to be an exclusive small collective where everyone unanimously decided anything for the crew. That includes new members getting in. We had intended the crew to be completely different from the "large by numbers crew" that were around the early 80's. It seems we have become what we so much spoke against. I speak as an STNer.

I also feel that the recent alleged "merger" of the two yet closely affiliated crews STN and K2S has hidden agendas that I am personally against. Whether the rumor is true or words have been taken out of context I just don't care anymore. It's just a constant debate that re-surfaces over and over again. Year after year and frankly - it holds me back.

I have consecutively put in work for the crew for nearly 25 years. CHECK!! And someone coming out of nowhere who does a couple of pieces trying to make changes for the crew or let alone someone who is NOT EVEN in the crew wanting to make changes and is allowed to - just baffles me.

I am well aware that I have always been one to go against the program to not follow the masses and I just feel that that attitude does not contribute to where and what the crew(s) wants to do. I don't conform to the masses nor do i "follow a program" - I am an individual. And I oppose the merger, I've always opposed the K2STN thing, I have fought strongly to educate people that the crews were TWO separate crews. I don't believe the crews should merge and become ONE and therefore I relieve myself from the crew and close the chapter. MAKE shall remain dormant for a while.

I am a 37 year old man to worry about crew politics.

RELIK once said; "I don't think anyone should get in the crew unless that person brings the crew up to the next level." - those are perhaps the best words I heard anyone in the crew ever say. And that is how I have always felt about letting people in the STN...too bad it don't seem that's the case anymore

I will always remember the original six in the mix - Sine, Easie, Doc43, Def, Skept and me. the original Second To None crew

The STN crew to me is and will always be - SEALED

BABA
CASH
COMIC
DEF
DOC43
EASIE
EYER
HEAVEN
IMAGE
JACK
MAKE
RELIK
REPO
SINE
SKETCH
SKEPT
TEMPT
TELER

and No one else...

This decision is also to honor my friend's wishes for STN. Unfortunately he is not around to defend himself and I feel that has been taken advantage of. A friend whom for the record was never K2S but only TWA and STN.

David SINE Davilas - R.I.P.

BEST WISHES to all and the crews endeavors

see you around.

yo.. honestly the people from Stn that influenced are no longer painting for various reason,(sad ones)
You were the only one that actually kept the crew alive, and kept that original classic stn originality in the streets...
NOW AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED THE CREW IS DEAD..

Its not what group you belong to, its what you can do as a individual that will affect and influence the culture, and you did that already.

Keep Developing brotha!

I hear ya' homeboy. Crew politics are a bitch. I know we've had our fair share. As we grow older & become more set in our ways, power seems to seep into our lives in the form of wanting to control(or not control) what little we can around us. Pride can be ones death. Bottom line...you do what YOU feel is best. And if that's what works for you then so be it. Crews are MEANT to accentuate the individual and vice versa. Be yourself, just yourself. Best to you man. The greatest thing about " The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art " and it's movement is the documentation of it's foundation. The S.T.N. crew with its Original 6 members not only influenced but help shaped our beloved city's graffiti foundation! This fact is cross-referenced in a majority of experiences that Relax and I have come across and no one could ever tarnish the image and love I have for the " Second To None " crew. I personally witnessed many of the ground breaking feats that Make , Sine ( Resting in peace ) , Easie ( Resting in peace ) , Doc 43 , Defer , and Skept did !

From early " RTD-Killing " to many full colored pieces on the street (most done in one night !) , to unforgettable " hand <myspace>style</myspace>s " and " one-line " tags. As S.T.N spun off its major influenced crew K.2.S. with a different mission in mind, I can mention many more crews that started as a direct link to S.T.N.'s membership. The above " sealed " crew as Make listed above and loves in his heart is comprised of L.A. graffiti legends and first ballot Hall of Famers ! You know visions , objectives , and directions of crews will always change Galo and your decision to move on is well respected and well wished in the best direction , but to me I will always remember you " Second To None ".

Hey Make, after our lengthy conversations the past few days on this subject I'm in complete agreement with you in this decision. As one of the 3 founders of Second To None crew I am very disappointed that you’re leaving the crew. I agree that the crew is no longer what it used to be as it was in the 80's and early 90's.
Although I may have stepped away from the Graff scene for a few years (due to personal goals of my own), one of the main reasons I'm back doing pieces is because of your encouragement and influence. You've definitely done a lot, if not, most of the work for STN. You're not only a great ambassador for the crew but for Graffiti itself.

As you know, I have a lot of respect for you and especially on how you’re stepping away from the crew; it says a lot about your character. You've not only shown commitment but also courage and selflessness because I don't know many people who would walk away from an establishment or organization they helped built; mad respects for you my brother!

Also, to add to your comment in regards to Sine;

"This decision is also to honor my friend's wishes for STN. Unfortunately he is not around to defend himself and I feel that has been taken advantage of. A friend whom for the record was never K2S but only TWA and STN..."

Here’s bit of history for those who may not know the origin of STN. Back in mid 80's, David (Sine) wanted to get into K2S, but he was denied many times. We completely understood why they denied Sine and others because K2S also had their objectives, which was to keep the crew tight and have a handful of great writers without making it too big and become "impersonal". So we weren't upset at K2S but were encouraged and influenced by them. This is what actually led Sine, Make and I to start our own crew (Second To None). We always intended to work side by side with K2S but at the same time keeping it separate. We were definitely two different teams but working together to progress graffiti and ourselves. All the K2S members were close friends of ours and still are, so this is NOT intended to disrespect K2S or anyone from the team, if it appears that way, I apologize ahead of time. I just think that it's important that the objectives and origin of STN is presented and that Sine was only STN. So I see Makes point, it is a little disappointing because Sine isn't here to comment on anything anyone says about him. I can vouch for this because Sine was very dear friend of mine and would actually stay at my and Galo's place for months at a time and us 3 were like brothers.

Make, thanks for keeping STN in the limelight for the past 25 years. To me, and I'm sure others will agree, STN and MAKE go hand-in-hand. I know for a fact that your next chapter will also be a successful one.

I truly admire your courage to take a big step forward and not letting anyone or anything get in your ways.

As for me, I will ponder on this and sit down and think what my next step will be.

Peace and much respect my brother.

I look forward to talking and painting with you this coming Memorial weekend.

Second To None...
Was one of the very first crews I heard of when I started. Innovators of Los Angeles... and the <myspace>style</myspace>s that have been, and still are being produced! You gotta do what ya gotta do and you've been around and in it. But when the politics start to get into the "voice & vision" of the crew, the "voice & vision" get distorted...

Stay Up MAKER and keep on doin' what your doin'.

Where do I start? Hmmmm...

I remember WHY most people (close friends!) couldn't all get into K2S...

Rick/Crime quoted it very simply... "5 alive in 85".

From that STN was born.

Seems like today the K2S moto is... "Everyone get in before its too late in 2008".

WHAT A JOKE!

As far as I'm concerned K2S ended many years ago! When the original members got caught up with all the evils of what life had to offer them at the time. Graffiti was NOT on their agenda!

Make now you know the feeling of why I STOPPED pushing K2S!

I'm just glad to see that Rick/Crime, Def, Duke, Slick, Kartoon, and some others that were around back in those days are alive and doing ok to great today.

I laugh when I see all these people pushing a crew that once meant so much to me.

K2S STN will always live on because of the memories, NOT because of all of those who write it today!

Peace,
Frame

PS. If you feel offened by my comments...GOOD! I know a lot of these people who are now pushing K2S and STN and by no means am I attacking your <myspace>style</myspace>, commitment, art, or just you as a person. This is about an idea that was started a long time ago among friends, and before most of you picked up a marker to write.

I know this decision did not come easy but all of your peers support you in whatever decision you choose. The Second To None crew will always be looked upon as one of the most inspirational crews in Los Angeles and in the Graff Community. Although its existence wouldn't be without the help of MAKE ONE.

Makes me think homie.
I know Crews arn't what they once were. A crew was a family in the 80s, tight knit groups of friends that bonded and pushed forward together. You could fight with crew, but it was like family, you had to work it out.
Now I feel crews are run like buisness, everyones thinking nation wide, world wide, with mergers and recruiting from other crews, putting asshole members in because they have the right connections, and members treat their crews like stepping stones to what they want next. I miss the days of helping each other come up, instead of "what can this person do for me?"
You have to follow what you think is right. I know I'v had my ups and downs in graffiti, with bumping into egos. Just stay humble the way you've been and go for yours homie. What you do from now doesn't change your history, you founded STN, STN has it's place as one of the first LA West Coast crews to rock LA/west coast <myspace>style</myspace>s, what ever you do, that's written in stone. Good luck homie.

Yo Galooo! I just read your post man, I feel you and I feel for you. That's a tough decision. One that can only be made from the heart. I've been in a similar situation in the past. Our crew was small and solid way back in the late 80's/early 90's. Within a 10 month period, we had hung a "13" on the end and became active recruiters. Some decisions were just made for us! Without wanting to walk away from something we felt so strongly about,(three little letters accompanied by a trece) we became a well oiled, killing/ money-making machine. I lost eight homies in the 90's 'cuz of the political madness that exploded back then. I miss them all dearly. Not to mention a new generation that is sooo fuuccckin foreign to me....youngsters that have died that I never knew or will ever have the opportunity to know. I don't know why/how things got so out of control but the outcome wasn't right. For the most part, I don't have any regrets because I wouldn't be who I am today without my life experiences....but I'd sure as fuuuccckkk retire my letters to have my friends back!!! I know that this scenario differs from yours but the the tie that binds are those letters. My closest friends and dearest family are exactly that.....close and dear, through no association of "letters". You and I don't need 'em. Walking away from those letters has to be hard but it is also your liberation. In the past, you helped steer the west coast along with several friends/associates. The ones that are "real" don't need those letters to navigate with you into the future. I ain't trying to kick knowledge bro but I sincerely feel for you. You'll always do big things because you've always done big things.
PEACE LOCO AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR NEW INDEPENDENCE

"POWER TENDS TO CORRUPT, ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY"

One more thing: It's 2008, we're all older, every generation goes through this- looking back at how things were in comparison to how things are NOW. No one is ever happier of the current times as we romantacize the past. Especially youth, when we "ruled the world"...or so it seemed. I believe this is all just part of becoming an adult. Handling your biz....not dating yourself, (as each generation that ages tends to do.)
Do your thing.
Peace. :)

What a trip huh. Well as u know i have represented the two crews from my intro and my initial feeling back then was to be down with STN, cause at the time STN was the shit. During this period K2S had slowed down and I had at the time been from KGB. I spoke to Prime asking if he had thought that they, STN would let me in. He then said to be down with K2S, I was shocked cause to me K2S was a whole different level, that I thought i was not ready for. During this time Sine, Make, Doc and Easy had hit the Belmont and was bombing the shit out of surrounding areas. I hung with Make and Sine for a short period and later ended up hanging with Prime more. During my time with Sine i never heard anything about being an exclusive crew, and honestly by letting so few in over the years i think has hurt us more than help us. I am sure that we passed up many good prospects by this whole exclusive idea. And the fact that you Make, is using Sines name do diss new members is fucking ridiculous. You know as well as me that you were kicked to the curve in the year just before his passing, Sine didnt really want to kick it with you because of the way you were. Not that you were an asshole or anything but just something about you that we can only take so much of. I dont mean this in a bad way but u tried to be down with us to much. You obviously had been confused in your early decisions about who you were a "Crip" or a RW. We obviously all made some bad decisions over the years as well as me, yet today i still stand by all i've been down with. I think the main reason for u leaving the crew is u know that u have been excluded beacuse of your actions and attitude. Honestly i think u knew u were out of the crew long ago and u owe lots to K2S and Rick for all he has given u. Without him what style would u of had? U know as well as me that he is the main reason that u are a graff writer today. U copied his outlines and took credit for the pieces that he did for u.
I am just letting all know the truth since u first put out there for all to see. Others had told me to keep this all within, but after reading this shit I cant say enough about how dissapointed i am. Anyway u can hardly say that u represented for all those years cause where were u. We both went through times of doing nothing and others kept the crew alive. Where were u when the Panic Zone was jumping off. I think that K2STN is one crew because we all came from the same shit, we all initially represented the Eastside, from the Belmont to Atlantic square. We al repped the same style that we are known for. Anyway i gotta go but since the Westcoast battle its been K2STN.

Wat up Paul? I respect what you had or have to say. For the record and for clarity I ain't trying nor am I using SINE's name to dis anyone. That is far beyond what I am articulating in my blog. I am simply stating that some of the decisions that have been made for the crew were hasty and simply unfair all around.

Yes it's true. I do owe a lot to Rick-K2S and is in fact one of the main reasons why I am a graffiti writer. I have never denied that nor have never failed to mention it when asked. But he aint the only one I owe it to. In addition to him there was my first influence which was Krenz/Yem and even the KGB heads. Prime also played a significant role as so did you Skept. You were one of my main influences and so was Defer and Sine and everyone around me.

Anyways - going back to the crew thing and it's exclusivity. The whole idea when the crew was formed was to unanimously let people in the crew. You are right, we may have passed up on many good prospects but at the same time there has been many people who have been dropped into the crew without bringing any value. The thing is, the "exclusive idea" was never really enforced. So what really hurt us? bad and hasty decisions.

I was not trying to enforce the exclusive ideal either but was more focused on making unanimous/collective decisions about letting people in the crew. Not just let someone in the crew simply because he or she gives me a ride or takes me out to eat here and there or buys me a coupe of drinks. What I was trying to cultivate was the idea of bringing in someone who had expressed interest in joining the crew, introduce them to the crew and then decide whether this individual was an element we wanted in the crew; by considering several things:

A) demeanor
B) style and aesthetic value
c) heart for the art
D) and lastly - all voting him/her in as a CREW

I am more than certain that you empathize with me in regards to random people being in the crew. Some of those feelings still resonate when you would hear of new members being in the crew without you being informed. You had also expressed to me that you were not too keen with all these new members being in the crew. (not referring to the new ones but in previous incidents)

I don't know what to say about your disappointment as I myself have been disappointed too Paul. AND this isn't about no longer being friends, which I hope we all still remain friends, but more about, and I paraphrase you, "standing with what I am down with". And as you also stated, if I was kicked to the curb then no harm done and there really has been no loss.

PEACE - MAKE
