The Barra Bar at The Springwood Hotel is quickly becoming a very popular hangout for live music lovers in recent times – no doubt because it is one of the few live music venues in Logan and the entry is FREE! (Yes that is Tiger Lillie’s favourite word). This particular Saturday night is no different.
With a decent turn out, In Death kick off the evening’s entertainment with brutal force. Playing a balance of melodic and aggressive metal, the band introduce some new and innovative ideas into their music which could excite even the strictest ‘by the book’ metal-head. Each band member had a different quality about them which was endearing and made it very easy to be liked e.g. the belching mistress, the footy loving larrikin, the mess-of-dreads drummer and so on. The only thing that let them down was the fact that you could see them thinking, which of course affected their movements. Still, an impressive performance nonetheless.
Next to take the stage were Silver Ocean Storm It was good to see that they were putting in so much effort. They brought extra lighting (including a light up mic stand) which, mixed with the smoke effects, enhanced their progressive style. They also put a lot of energy into their performance, proving themselves to be talented musicians. The first few songs were amazing but around halfway through the set the band hit a plateau and became slightly dull. The highlight of the set was undoubtedly the keyboardist whose melodies helped make each song individual rather than melding into a set long mess. If this band can learn how to take their audience on a rollercoaster ride Tiger Lillie will have nothing bad to say about them ever again.
It was unfortunate to see that by the time headliners Down Royale hit the stage about half of the punters who had been there earlier in the night had gone home. Oh well, their loss! This band definitely provided us all with a good time! They had a tight knit sound which was heavily influenced by Lamb of God and Pantera. Everything they played was done so with spot-on precision. The vocalist had a voice that was so powerful he could tear shreds off of anyone and the drummer just didn’t let up, making each song forceful and in your face. It was refreshing to see that as well as being great musicians they also seemed to be really nice guys, standing at the front of the stage and supporting all the other bands during their sets. They make a great team and for a band so young they are playing at a standard beyond their age.
