The Cage (or Kage as its now apparently to be known) is well known as being THE rock club in Dundee, so this was anticipated to be a big night. With a crowd of hardcore rockers with high expectations, the pressure was on to deliver the proverbial 'great rock show'. Modern rock music would appear to be overly consumed by singers in drainpipe trousers staring at their shoes and boys that straighten their hair. Dark Matter aim to bring back the days of singers in smoky rooms and shredding guitar solos without the need for fire-breathing midgets or flying inflatable pigs to distract the audience's attention from the actual music. With a setlist ranging from Metallica to Disturbed, and Guns N Roses to ACDC, there's bound to be something for any self-respecting rock fan.
The gig kicks off with ACDC's Sin City from their Powerage album. It's infectious opening riff is quickly dwarfed by Steve's powerful vocals and from the looks on the faces of the crowd members, they like what they hear. They continue with a cover of Judas Priest's Living After Midnight and the band are more relaxed as well as the crowd. There are some blinding guitar solos from Mark and Brian bringing to life classics such as ACDC's Rock n Roll Damnation (another Powerage track), Megadeth's Symphony of Destruction, and the Genesis anthem Land of Confusion as covered by metal band Disturbed. The epic Enter Sandman by Metallica showcases stand-in drummer Will's drumming as the backbone of the band, and a bass intro from Trevor halfway through the set leads to a powerhouse of rock known simply as No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne. A quick dedication to the bassists daughter as it's her 21st birthday and the world's most famous riff gets the whole crowd enjoying Sweet Child O Mine. Steve's vocals bear an uncanny resemblance to that of James Hetfield, evident throughout the Metallica tracks when several members of the audience did a double take. The gig finishes with Velvet Revolver's Slither, and yet again the chance to emulate Slash's fast-paced solos. A good time is had by all, and Dundee has been well and truly rocked. Until next time, that is.
