Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I've
really posted anything here, and I apologize for that. I just finished a short tour with
Lydia and
All the Day Holiday that was amazing. It was one of the first tours where I've felt almost completely carefree and happy. (And funnily enough, it's one of the smallest 'tour crew' sizes I've ever gone on the road with: just 2 other people and myself, with just me and my drummer splitting all of the driving. Compare that to several years ago when I was touring with 8 or more people at times and I was constantly miserable on the road...)
Anyway, now I'm home from tour, and I've spent the last 48 hours
carving pumpkins and
making Halloween treats with my
girlfriend. Yes, it's a little early for all of that Halloween stuff, but it seemed like a good way to relax and come down after tour.
As most of you know,
I will be releasing TWO new albums before the end of the year:
One of the albums is a
b-sides album that will have
20-30 previously unreleased PlayRadioPlay! songs. That album will be entitled: "
Besides, Nothing (B-Sides and Rarities, 2003-2009)" and will be released under the familiar name
PlayRadioPlay!.
The second album will be a
12 song full length album with
all brand new material, much of which I have already started performing live. Here's the part where some of you will get mad at me: Unlike the b-sides album,
the new full length will not be released under the name PlayRadioPlay!.
As some of you have heard (most likely from
this Dallas Observer article):
I have made the decision to begin making music under a new name: Analog Rebellion.
I have made this decision for many reasons, and it's taken me months to decide exactly how to share my thought process with you. In late
2004, not long after my 15th birthday, I started this project under the name
PlayRadioPlay!. I began recording and releasing crappy demos under that name, and I never looked back. It always seemed to be a good fit for the music I was creating.
However, a lot has changed. Now, I am 20 years old. I have been touring the country on and off for over 3 years, and, as expected between the ages of 15 and 20, I have changed significantly as a person.
I'm sure you have too. Think about what you were doing 5 years ago. What music were you listening to? What were your hobbies? Who were your friends? I'm sure a lot is different, because with 'youngins' like us, it would be strange for someone to not change significantly in such a large span of time (at least relative to the time you, assuming you're around my age, or I have been alive).
Artistically, I have come to the point where I no longer feel that the name PlayRadioPlay! represents the music I create. When people hear the name PlayRadioPlay!, they imagine a certain kind of person/music. That perceived image might have been accurate 3 years ago, but I don't believe that it is today.
A lot of people have asked me about my "name and style change". I'm not changing musical styles alongside the name. The style has been constantly evolving ever since the day I started making music, and it will continue to do so until the day I stop. The music would be evolving and changing even if the name stayed the same. That's simply the nature of art and music (at least mine). I am different today than I was 5 years ago, so my music reflects that.
I am not "quitting" or "breaking up" PlayRadioPlay. Analog Rebellion is the same project/group/band (whatever you want to call it) as PRP,
just the name is different. I still plan on playing old PRP songs at shows, I'll still sell PRP music, and everything I've done under the name PRP will remain the way it was. I have no intention of destroying what I have created and turned PRP into.
Another reason I am doing this is to free myself, in a way. For a long time I made business decisions from the viewpoint of "What is best for my career?". That viewpoint is fucked. It creates stale artists. It causes musicians to fear the risky and unknown. I don't want to create music and make artistic decisions inside of the "What is best for my career?" cage. I want to express myself fully and in a manner of which I choose,
even when it might not make me the most money or win me the most fans.
With all of that being said, I hope you still support me and the music I create regardless of what name I choose to go by, because the name will never have an effect on the music. In the end,
it's just a name. And for now, that name will be
Analog Rebellion.
Thanks so much for your support. More developments will be coming soon, including new merch, finalized release dates, etc.
