If you think about it, the only Indian person in a major motion picture (No not fuckin' smoke signals) who wasn't portrayed as a victim was Sonny Landham's character "BILLY" in PREDATOR...he was the "go to" guy in that film whenever anybody wanted to know what was happening which in retrospect "was" pretty stereotypical, but Sonny was so magnetic and menacing in that film, he pulled it off.

Case in point...picture Nicholas Cage's character bossing around Adam Beach's character in "Windtalkers"...it's easy to see because...well, that's what was happening...now picture Arnold's character bossing Sonny Landham's character Billy around in the predator...if that was the case, Sonny was meaner than a fuckin' hyena...like a nuclear reactor waiting to melt down, and you'd get the feeling that Arnold "might" get away with it...once!...then Billy would've crawled into his hut at night, put a knife to Arny's throat when he was sleeping and growled in his ear "Don't you ever talk to me like that again motherfucker...you've been warned"...

Also near the end of Billy's life as he was about to confront the predator, he tore his amulet off, gripped it in one hand, and with the other, slid out a great big, fuck-off, special forces, survival knife that looked more like a machete and went out like a soldier...I liked the fact that Billy never laughed at the skinny white soldier's jokes...not because he was stupid, or stoic, but just because they weren't that fuckin' funny to him...it wasn't until later on in the film that Billy finally laughed at the skinny dude's constant one liners...the other thing was that Billy looked like a man...everybody did in that film...none of this faggy, skinny, Robert Pattinson, Zack Effron, Karl Urban girly shit...my old manager used to tell me "If I'm watching a film and I don't feel as if I personally would want to follow the leading man into battle...I'll lose interest in him immediately"...

In either case Billy was a bad-assed motherfuckin' Indian and we need to be portrayed in that light more often...not to mention our women, who are NEVER portrayed as strong at all in films...as a matter of fact, I can't name one! LAKOTA WOMAN  was a fuckin' joke! Where are our AEON FLUX'S AND LIEUTENANT RIPLEYS
?

The broken chain was an unadulterated, unquantified, racist, lame, glossed-over, peice of shit! All those period peices are! Fuck wisdom! "That's" stereotypical! I'm so tired of that "wise old sage" horseshit in films about Indian people, FUCK THAT SHIT! I wanna see a fuckin' film where Indians see somethin' they don't like and burnt it to the ground for once...with no retribution 'cause either everybody's too fuckin' scared to retaliate, or the Indians are so slick about it, they never get caught! I fucking HATE how our collective rage is never show-cased..we've turned our cheeks so many times in movies about us our necks are cramped!

Wouldn't it be nice if VIOLENCE wasn't a part of our world and not a word in the dictionary any longer. Guess I'm looking through rose colored glasses.  Most wars are fought over land, a woman , or religion....  so sad! Do you suppose that if women guided the world that it might be more peaceful????

One more time...as long as "we" let "them" make films about "us", and "we" let filmmakers in our community who have been fully and completely assimilated into the colonial mind-set and are too frightened to make films that will disturb and repel but are truthful and pulsing with vision and integrity ...films about indigenous people will "keep on" SUCKIN'! Check out the colony by a young Mic Mac kid Jeff Barnaby..I loved it, it was 10 minutes of chaos and just dripping with potential...

Don't you think it all comes down to a complete lack of desire on the part of film makers to ever understand the native mentality?  In order to effectively portay whatever story at hand it would take the commitment of immersion in our varied cultures. The entertainment biz has always seemed more than happy to keep all of us relegated to fictional historical period pieces. It must be frustrating to you as an actor to see so few scripts where we as people are allowed to enter the modern era. Our female nation is and has always been strong...not in a loud Hollywood surgically enhanced way. Without our collective Grandmothers and Mothers we would not have what little we have left today. It would be nice to see native actors in more mainstream shows where they are the character FIRST and just happen to be native. In this time of so called "cultural sensitivity" and "political correctness" it seems we shall remain fodder for silly romantic westerns until Hollywood allows natives in their projects to leave the lodge and buckskin behind.

In » Thunderheart »’s  ends  Val Kilmer faces up to the fucking police by turning his back , near Graham Geen., and Maggie is suggested being extremist of AIM . “Jimmy looks twice”- John Truddel fights and says « sometimes they have to kill us ». I like the opposition created by both of these attitudes : philosophical Indian and hard fighting Indian .  I understand that , like an actor , you wish to get recognised in another way of expression.

Thunderheart . Yes , she dies for having used law arguments.Would it be preferable in the script that she changed into Calamity Jane ?Armed women can be seen all around the Stronghold hills .And they aren’t decided to die. I love anyway humour in this movie , and Sheila Touseys character : she defies fbi power and these macho guys.

fuckin' eh....the native women in films are usually waiff-ish willowbush river princesses who haven't spent a fuckin' minute  tannin' hides, or gathering roots and berries.  They aren't able to carry  sides of moose back to the camp, skinned, and then portioned and dried, or carry 20 fish on her back - up a steep embankment, to the truck - take it back home and gut, dry/can all her wealth she has brought home.  (All the while carrying her children on her back, caring for her elders and men, and ensuring that enough was stored for each to last the seasons.)

They were/are/can be medicine themselves.   Our true women are cedar tree trunks with eagle down hearts whose rage and fury can and will protect with force any who are stupid enough to get between her and her children / family / friends, or be the most angelic spirit and model of love you can find on all this planet.  So sad that Hollywood keeps our native people as flat, romanticized characters who fill plot, rather than make it.

Let's be honest.  It's a rare movie that portrays any woman in a leading role as a strong, intelligent, independant and self resourceful woman without first and foremost portraying her as a sexual object.

Let's be honest here, sex has to be a given.   Once we establish that we can accentuate the more important parts.

A man in a movie does not need to give sex in order to command respect or to be viewed as powerful, but as you said apparently a woman must.  And is she taken seriously after this?  Are her mental attributes or physical attributes appreciated more by the male characters and viewers?

I was trollin but now that you ask, i think the notion that a sexually secure woman should be ashamed of herself (or is less respectable in any facet) is somewhat of an indoctrinated notion.  I have a more "greek" approach to the female nude.  The earliest depiction of female sexuality in art was made by an australopithecus between 24000 and 22000 years ago when we resembled more monkey than man and we know a male carved it because it has huge mammaries, huge hips and a little, peanut head with no face.  lol
Venus uit willendorf Pictures, Images and
Photos
Some of my favorite women in history used their sexuality as a symbol of power over entire nations and empires.  So you see, it's quite natural to idolize a woman.  It's as old as humans.  However i haven't seen any artifacts that were ever depicted by females idolizing men so i think you're on to something.
If a woman chooses not to, i'm not going to judge her, good for her for not succumbing to vox populi.
To answer your questions, i think yes.  I've also noticed in some instances the young ladies that don't sell nude shots end up doing it later in life for more money.  More power to them either way.  I have a tremendous respect for most women that can get a little leverage in society.
Besides, i didn't say she HAD to "give sex" to command respect, sometimes that just goes without saying.
I was just saying that once we get it to where the viewers understand that it's there if say the lead male role needs a lil booty call, then we could focus on the more accentuated parts of her character.
lol

I have.  I love ancient history.  I'm only an armchair historian but i read much on the Greco-Persian war to about 500 ADD.
I agree, both counterparts have contributed vast and wide to sexual depiction throughout the centuries.
I have depicted both in my art.
Here is a tshirt design i did commemorating the female.
Thanks for the suggestion Phyllis!

Your right Eric, just for once I'd love to see Native American's in a big time motion picture as leads who are strong, bad assed and dont take shit from anyone and not be in a period piece drama. I cant see why:

Eric Schweig - Could have been Vin Deisels character in XXX & for a strectch of the imagination you coulda made a great Robocop LOL
Graham Green - could have portrayed the president in Air Force One
David Midthunder/Zahn McLaren/George Leech/Eric Schweig - could have been "Wild Hogs"

I could sit here all day & point out all the films Native actors could have been in & done the characters justice.

Why not some of the female actors have been Kate Beckinsale's character in "Underworld"?

Ya get my drift!

Your also right - Lakota Woman was shitty!!

Yo,
I just think colour, heritage shouldn't matter for a role, a good actor should getting it, and it shouldn't matter if the hero with a machine gun or without is black, white, striped or whatever.
And I do agree the period pieces are crap, they come not even close to history (as we know it), they portray our "the white mens" opinion, even pieces with native collaboration, what is kinda sad.
Why not show native people like everybody else, "normal" what I think most of you are?

Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies based on the short story by Stephen King (only titled "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption").  It's one of those rare movies that is actually as good as or better than the book.  The thing that I really love is that the character played by Morgan Freeman, Red, was called Red in the book because he's Irish with red hair.  I love that Morgan was able to break that boundary and was given that role based on his acting skill and not his race.

I'm more curious as to what and why a writer creates a story ,the outcome or resolve at the end, and what it might have to say about time and society.

"Faggy", "Girly" - humans never cease to amaze me.  One would think someone who has experienced ignorance, prejudice, stereotyping, objectifying, negative romanticism would have some sensitivity to others who are frequently the targets of same.  Apparently not.

Let me get stereotypical for a moment.  I have always thought that guys who are so macho - swaggering/strutting, spitting, scratching their crotch, rooster in the hen house, notches on the bed post guys who also needed all the macho accoutrements like big guns, big knives, big cars, etc. have weenie penis issues or virility/performance concerns and needed all that stuff to  address their anxieties and define their sexuality to others.

I also hope that none of the gay kids you probably work with in the homeless shelters reads your posts.  Some of them really have a tough time as it without getting dished by someone they probably respect.

Instead of criticizing others’ works why not write an intelligent piece of art that proves Natives are able to do more than wear leathers and feathers? You are the angry artist personified so why not channel that into something positive? The world is already overrun with whiners – quit pissing in the wind and wondering why you keep getting wet! I have been reading your blogs for a little over a year now and you are abundantly capable of conveying your outlook to the masses and in my opinion, which obviously is the most important one to me (LOL), you could create an incredibly passionate work of art from the perspective of a true Native man who is unabashedly proud of his heritage and pulls no punches because he isn’t afraid whom he offends because integrity, honesty and empowerment override political correctness.

P.S. For the Eric fanatics who will perceive this as a vicious attack on him, which it is not, don’t clog up his page with pissy remarks directed towards me– he is a big boy and can fight his own battles if he so chooses!

P.S.S.  This is not important but Sonny Landham actually started out in pornographic movies – No, I have not seen any (with him anyway, LOL) but I first saw him in 48 hours and thought he was very attractive and did a little research to find out about him…..didn’t have the Internet back then so I must have gone to the library!! Peace.

So when I can expect the premiere of the movie made from the fabulous script you authored?

I understand why you are so enthusiastic and fervent in your “rantings” at the world and I am aware that you utilize your talents in a positive line of attack, i.e. your volunteerism, evocatively beautiful carvings, and speaking up for Native rights. However, it baffles me that you continually mock the movies you have made, which demeans those involved in the projects as well. I thoroughly enjoyed your performances in Big Eden and Skins, as did many others so when you say they suck I am confused as to why you would involve yourself in the first place. I know we all have to pay the bills somehow but you stand up and yell the loudest at others who participate in the denigration of Native Peoples…..what’s up with that? And I agree with Phyllis’ comment about being a burr under the saddle and how agitation is a superlative motivator and yes I am pleased that you continually challenge the uneducated, misinformed sheep because if not you, who? Prime Minister Schweig...now that would be an interesting campaign!
