The President of American Atheists is coming to talk to our group!

Dr. Ed Buckner
"This is a Free Country, Not a Christian Nation - In Freedom We Trust!"

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Johnson Center 3rd Floor Meeting Room A

Did you know that there is more religiousness in the U.S. than in many countries where an official religion is established? Dr. Ed Buckner will argue that the U.S. Constitution was designed to separate church from state and establish a nation in which power comes from the citizens, not God.

Buckner is the president of American Atheists and the former executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, which he represented as a prominent speaker at the Godless Americans' March on Washington. A native of Georgia, Buckner is a freethought activist, writer, debater and speaker whose engagements have taken him throughout the U.S. He is one of the leaders of the Atlanta Freethought Society.

A hardcore Atheist, Buckner has written, spoken, debated, and appeared often in the media, both locally and nationally. He has been on MSNBC, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Fox News, the Michael Medved Show, CNN, the national CBS Radio News, NPR, and on nearly every local media outlet (radio or television) in the Atlanta and Buffalo areas, most repeatedly. He's been quoted, sometimes at length, in newspapers all over the nation and, occasionally, elsewhere in the world, been a featured guest on many Internet broadcast shows, and given the keynote address for Atheists Alliance International.

Buckner will be introduced by Rick Wingrove, Virginia State Director of American Atheists.

Free and open to the public.

Directions? The presentation will be in the Johnson Center Meeting Room A on the 3rd Floor. It is free and open to the public however there is a fee to park on campus. The Mason Pond Parking Deck is the closest available visitor parking to the Johnson Center. It can fill up during this time of day however - necessitating the use of another deck on campus further out - please plan your time accordingly. The rate is $2/hr with a maximum fee of $8. If you are taking the Metro, for $0.75 you can also take the CUE bus from the Vienna (Orange Line) Station to campus.

This event was made possible with support from American Atheists. Since 1963, American Atheists has been the premier organization laboring for the civil liberties of Atheists, and the total, absolute separation of government and religion. It was born out of a court case begun in 1959 by the Murray family which challenged prayer recitation in the public schools. That case – Murray v. Curlett – was a landmark in American jurisprudence on behalf of our First Amendment rights. Now in its fourth decade, American Atheists is dedicated to working for the civil rights of Atheists, promoting separation of state and church, and providing information about Atheism.
