First off, let me say, much love to 6th Sense for pulling together the musical family that he did for last night's show. I am blessed to be around such performers and musicians.
It's hard for me to believe that only six short years after 6th sense planted the seeds of becoming Mike Maven within me (pause) that I am now where I am at, doing what I am doing with my music, for my music, and making the music that truly expresses me. I was a hip hop head long before I knew I was, because hip hop speaks to my soul, as I know it does for many others. My music is not always hip hop influenced, and at times is downright completely unrelated, but the spirit of hip hop music is what drives me nonetheless. I always will make whatever music I make for the same reason that hip hop artists do, no matter what it sounds like.
All that being said, I blessed the stage last night with some of the best and truest hip hop artists I know. It's amazing to realize that the people you look to the most for inspiration and dedication to an art form are the people you are most closely tied to. When I can't find a good record to listen to, I put on 6th Sense. I actually listen to the music we have created together. What an amazing feeling!
And here I am, making music because I BELIEVE in the power of music itself, getting to humbly be a part of an incredible event: the final hip hop show ever at one of the most historic venues in the birth city of the music I love, and a sold out show nonetheless. I am inspired, grateful, and in disbelief that I was able to be a part of this.
And I realized something as I watched and performed last night. Music is making a great shift right now in many ways: in the way it is sold, the way it is consumed, and its venues of expression. The Knitting Factory was a relic of a great era of new York hip hop, but music will continue in its own way beyond the live venue, and those of us making it are ready to embrace it. Art will always find its own way. That is what makes us human.
6th, Will, Daytona, Outasight, Miz Metro... Keep on. You inspire me. We inspire eachother.
