So the movie awards were in town here last week and I was fortunate to get a ticket and after party pass from an old friend at MTV. I of course got there late, thinking I would skip the red carpet and hoopla stuff, which I thought started at 5. I got there and was like aren't there supposed to be a lot of people here or something? They were all already inside as the show had started at 5. I walked in just to here Coldplay finish their song.
I took my seat and enjoyed a fairly entertaining show. The best moment would have to be when Mike Myers and Dana Carvey did a “Waynes World” sketch. When those guys started jamming “Waynes World, Excellent, Waynes World” people jumped to their feet. The skit was funny. Definitely the best single moment of the show.
The other was the lifetime achievement award for Adam Sandler. First of all, he's not that old, but for the MTV audience I guess he's ancient. Tom Cruise was presenting and must have used 14 different nicknames for Adam varying from Sandman, Sandster, Sanski. Seriously, he never used the same play off Sandler name more then once. Cruise gave the Sandster credit for helping him make his iconic wardrobe choice of tightywhities for his role in “Risky Business.” This in effect launched his career.
While this is going on I am of course checking out all the action on stage as they set up. It looked like a 12-piece band with 50's style backup singers and horns. I thought is Amy Winehouse playing tonight or what? Then Cruise finishes his synonym game with Sandler's name and 8 dancers in gold bikini's come bouncing out like ballerina's. Then from below the stage, the Sandmiester is raised up to the stage like Jon Bon Jovi style He has a guitar and mic and begins to play and sing “Nobody does it better; Nobody does it better; Nobody does it better then the Sandman Can!” It was hilarious. The girls dancing had this quirky/crazy choreography to this James Bond song. Afterwards, Sandler told the audience this was probably the most egotistical thing I have ever done in my life.
We went to the after party and it was fun. I mean there's an open bar and lots of food. A few celebrities hanging out, but for the most part they split. They can go eat somewhere else for free that's far more exclusive I guess. I did see Paris Hilton and all I will say is she seemed pretty cool. I mean she walks around and says hello to people and smiles. I am not really a fan, but she doesn't have to do that. Perhaps her time in jail softened her up?
