Scotland's Year of Homecoming may be more than a year away, but preparations for the 2009 celebrations are already building up steam.
Two artists are set to preview their 2009 work with a short film to be projected on to buildings in three Highland locations on Hogmanay. The 10-minute film conveys the creation of photographic portraits of five iconic figures from the huge diaspora of Scots living around the world, including photographer Albert Watson, singer Roseanne Cash, writer Alistair Macleod, artist John Bellany, and film director Michael Caton-Jones.
The portraits are the work of Brora photographer Craig Mackay and the film is made by Cromarty director Don Coutts with music by Phil Cunningham and contemporary Scots band Shutter.
The film will be projected on to a wall of the Eastgate Centre in Falcon Square, Inverness, and the Ice House, in Ullapool, between 4pm and 7pm, and Dornoch Castle between 10.30pm and 1am.
By 2009, the project, known as Salt of the Earth, will have grown into a major portrait exhibition incorporating images of 50 men and women of Scots ancestry, or who capture the essence of Scotland, and an accompanying film documentary.
Meanwhile, applications are being invited for 2009 themed events in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.
Up to £50,000 is available for special events designed to support the aims of the Year of Homecoming, celebrating Scotland's outstanding contributions to the world.
