So, the other day my husband was in the garage, working on a circuit. (He's designing an amplifier.) I geek on circuitry from time to time, so I'm always checking in to see what he's putting together and it always seems to help for him to bounce ideas off me or just have someone to show his work to.
He had a bread board with components hooked up to various machines. "Check this out."
"Okay," I said, wondering exactly what it was gonna do. Shy of catching on fire, I'm not sure I'd know what I'm looking at if it did something amazing. I don't know what to look for on the oscilloscope.
He reached up next to my head and cranked a knob.
All of a sudden, I thought there was a ghost in the garage. I chuckled, started looking around, trying to find the visitor...but my sense determined the frequency was too stable to be an entity. Hmmm...
My husband made a face, not upset that I'd laughed. He knew I wasn't laughing at his circuit. "What?"
I turned toward the knob he'd turned. It was on a power supply. "Ummm... Let me go get my K-II. You turned that knob and suddenly I sensed a ghost. I'm betting that power supply isn't shielded very well."
"Oh crap. So, I'm sitting here frying my brain?"
"You might be." I retrieved my meter. Sure enough. The power supply was emitting 10+ mG. The function generator was up over 20. Holy High EMF, Batman!
I now joke about his haunted circuitry, but that incident did help provide proof that I'm sensitive to EMF. Beyond that, we had a huge discussion on quantum phenomenon and all sorts of interesting stuff.
...And the circuit he was trying to show me? Well, it is haunted after all...by too much hum. He's back to the drawing board. Next time I go out there, I'm gonna stand at least ten feet away in order to enjoy the geekery without the fake ghost.
