Who Gives Kudos:

Saturday, March 31, 2007
1.) Why is there a large, blue and yellow-ish bruise on my ribcage? I don't remember doing anything that would have caused it, and I haven't done any heavy drinking lately, so a mystery bruise of this magnitude is quite an anomaly.

2.) Why are the additive and subtractive color spectra different? The way I understand it, pigment functions by only reflecting certain wavelengths of light, so it's all additive by the time it reaches your eye... but you get different results from mixing the same colors in the additive spectrum than you do in the subtractive spectrum. I've tried asking instructors at my school about this, I've tried asking friends about this, and I've tried asking random nerds on the internet about this... nobody has given me an answer as of yet.

3.) Are there any good American political theory writers? Ian asked me this today... there are plenty of satirical political writers and topical political analysis writers in this country, but are there any who analyze the political world in order to build a model for understanding it? I'm sure there are plenty out there, but they don't seem to get much exposure... I'm just curious. I guess there's Naoam Chomsky... though, as far as I know, most of his written theory is about linguistics.

4.) Should I get rid of my car? I live right next to a BART station now, and the only place I regularly go that isn't easily accessible by public transport is Caveh's... though having to sit through a long bus ride seems like less of an inconvenience than all the troubles and expensese that come with owning a car and driving in a city where nobody pays attention to the traffic laws or where they're going.

That's all for now. Answers, attempts at answers and completely irrelevant replies are appreciated.

1. The bruise on your ribcage is the aftermath of your eastern european debachery a couple of weeks ago...it's common knowledge that drinking-related injuries can take a while to show up ;) (Either that or Tanuki and Toru are ganging up on you while you sleep :) )
2. I was not previously aware of the color spectrum conundrum...now this will cause me too to lose sleep until we can find an answer.
3. He's not a writer...but Stephen Colbert does a good job of keeping us more liberal-minded people out of politically-driven depression with a humorous twist on political analysis
4. I would suggest that you try taking public transit around town a bit before you part with your car- then make a decision...

Why can't I give you three kudos?

1. Moving? Heavy things can make bruises, and I'm sure you were carrying some.

2. I've also wondered about this one without being able to receive a satisfactory answer. Perhaps it has something to do with the pigment already being in the object (and absorbing all but certain frequencies) vs. the light shining against the object then reflecting back... if it were white it would virtually absorb none of them, right? I'm not sure, but that almost seems to make sense.

3. I don't know if Chomsky is a "theory" writer when it comes to politics, but at least his work is more analytical than most.

4. From an environmental standpoint, I suppose we all "should" get rid of our cars. I sure would miss mine, though. Carrying groceries home on public transit is less than enjoyable.

Appendix. Eeeeeenteresting...

I got lots of moving bruises, but those have pretty much all faded away by now. This one is from something more recent.

The color thing is starting to make a bit of sense, thinking about it in terms of wavelengths... I guess when you have two different pigments together, one can absorb wavelengths that the other reflects, keeping it from having an additive effect. Still, I think the universe should make this one easier to understand.

Another reason the car is less appealing now is that I share a refrigerator with four other people, and don't have a need to carry home large amounts of groceries.

Thanks for the answers, Ruth and Danielle. Maybe this will be the excuse I need to finally poke around in Chomsky's writing and figure out what his deal is.

I have at least to Chomsky books, if you want to borrow them.
