Ellinwood Kansas was named after Captain John Ellinwood and was settled in 1872.
Cellars were dug in front of the two blocks of downtown stores, and covered with planks of wood to be used as side walks. Wagons of coal would come and fill the cellars full. The coal was used to heat the town, and surrounding homes.
In the 1930's coal became obsolete due to the use of natural gas. The city realized that the limestone basements could be turned into store fronts and the cellars into underground side walks. Basically turning downtown Ellinwood into an early years shopping mall.
Separating walls were installed in the 1940's just after WWII to block access from one building to another and the use of the tunnels pretty much ended at that time, but they remained mostly unchanged until 1982 when new sidewalks were built and the city filled most of the tunnels with sand.
Today only 3 parts of the tunnels still exists. Under the Dicks building (open for private tours) and under the Elliotts Antique building.
WPRS was honored enough to be the first team to investigate this underground city as well as the Elliotts Antique building.
Some of the claims that WPRS was called in to investigate were of a shadow man that had been spotted and felt on several occasions. Believed to be of a man that had been shot and left to die below the Elliotts Antique building.
The apparition of Bernard Millet is also believed to haunt the Elliott Antique store. Mr. Millet committed suicide in the building on Feb 24th 1927 when the store was a hotel, and he was actually in the dinning hall.
And a spirit of a girl is believed to move items around on the Second floor of this same building.
We were also asked to investigate the tunnels, barber shop, and bathing area that have been preserved underground.
Our finding will be posted on our main website in the very near future at www.wichitaparanormal.com
