So about some 36 hours after President -elect Barack Obama was announced the winner of this years elections, Im still having some difficulty comprehending what just happened. Between my engrained cynicism, frustration, and disillusion with not only the American political process, but the American people ,especially with racial dynamics involved, I was prepared for failiure or at best not even able to fully grasp the idea of what is now reality. America's first black president, and no this isnt Alan Keyes, or Jesse Jackson y'all, this is a man with progressive credentials and ideals that i can stand behind. Do i agree with everything President Barack has posed? Definitely not, but I understand in order to heal a nation its going to take incremental change, and folks this is as a big an increment as we will see probably in our lifetimes. Perhaps this will in some strange and indirect way lead to the elimination of the main two party system format that dictates the majority of political discussion. All I know is its truly amazing. Our president is truly a one of a kind individual, and him winning was due to a multitude of factors that created a perfect storm, the economy, the stinking war, his agenda, his eloquence, his looks, his credentials, etc etc.
And the reaction to this win, the dancing in the streets across not the only the nation but the world, and the HOPE (sounds cheesy, but this is the kind of utopian cheese that i'll happily scarf down) that this elicits for everyone, but even more so for people who look like me. The black kids that are frustrated by the status quo and even those who use it as an excuse to be complacent and lazy, I've been guilty of it at times myself knowing that it was a flimsy excuse. Well now, although we will still have barriers, this is the one of the greatest testaments of breaking them barriers and persevering. I know this all sounds cheesy, but it is so so true.
Of course this country has a ways to go in really really healing, racism and class war are very strong and institutionalized entities and they don't just disappear overnight. But this is a very focused and monumental step, very BIG.
Up to this point, President elect Barack Obama has brought millions of people together. Seeing people coming together like this is extremely rare in our more and more polarized society. It is something that only happens usually after an acute extreme crisis (i.e. 9/11). So this being the opposite of that has lead to exuberance and unseen unity. Before even stepping into the oval office, Barack has made this joyous occasion look not unlike the Bobito and Spinna annual Stevie Wonder parties, where you will find literally everyone (blacks, whites, mexicans, middle eastern, gays , straights, etc.) proving that Stevie has been a transformative musician. Equally, President elect Barack Obama ,before even stepping into the White House, has been a transformative politician; lets hope that he continues and really transforms the game that is politics (polittrickkks) in America!!!!
and yes, even if just a lil bit, being American has already become instantly cooler again!!
