Think bump is meeting a pretty impressive roster of sports stars before birth. Now I’m wondering whether our infant will be blessed with the speed of Jensen Button, the skill of Eric Cantona and soon the sheer brute force of Sir Chris Hoy…who’s visiting 6 Music next week.

Jenson was a strange one as I’d never imagined him to be as charming as he was. I’d kept an eye on his career since he burst onto the Formula 1 scene and always wondered how he felt about being usurped as Britain’s top driving talent by a young upstart from Hertfordshire last year. He’s been portrayed as petulant, arrogant but I found him down to earth and humble.

He was one of the first people to speak to me at last week’s Glamour Magazine Women of the Year Awards and was completely approachable and interested in the impending birth. In fact the entire evening was wholly enjoyable, apart from my insistence I could wear my gold stilettos for the entire evening at 8 months pregnant - ouch!

I think daunting events like that are much more enjoyable because you’re not perceived as a threat or competition when pregnant. People work out what they think you’re about very early on and can talk to you. Almost everyone is comfortable with rotund lady in bulging evening dress.

Along with his questions about my forthcoming birth, Jenson let slip he was competing in the upcoming London Triathlon which I did two years ago and loved. So I’ll tell my unborn once they’re old enough I traded training tips with burgeoning Formula 1 talent not on driving but swimming in open water.

And then of course there has been the recent encounter for the bump with one enigmatic Frenchman…he may have mumbled and acted the absolute professional but I still came away thinking Eric was magnifique. Great sense of humour, brilliant outlook on life…and surprisingly doesn’t take himself too seriously. Qualities I would wish on any bump…
