When most people think of bluegrass music, they think of the Appalachian mountains, and places like Kentucky and West Virginia.  However, for many years now Colorado has been a sort of western home of bluegrass, hosting the world-famous Telluride Bluegrass Festival and producing bands like Leftover Salmon that combined old-school picking with new-school jams.

From that proud tradition comes Whitewater Ramble, a high-energy outfit from Fort Collins that brings incredible spirit to their performances.  They have snagged coveted opening slots for jamgrass heavyweights Railroad Earth and bluegrass legend Del McCoury, all while building a loyal fanbase in Colorado and expanding their touring around the country.

The band just released a dynamic new live CD and DVD called Live from the Big Sky that captures the band doing what they do best:  tearing through a lively set of covers and originals in front of an enthusiastic audience.  New Orleans piano legend Henry Butler sits in on a soulful version of B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" that breaks the bluegrass mold, and the blues is a big part of Whitewater Ramble's music, separating it from other bluegrass groups.  Call it bluesgrass, if you will.

The group has a way of making cover songs their own - check out the "Stuck in the Middle With You>Billie Jean" combo, which works better than it has a right to, and these are solid versions of "I Know You Rider" and "New Minglewood Blues" from the Dead songbook.  Still, their original tunes shine the brightest, like the inciendiary "Pack Mule Blues" which hits interstellar hyperdrive with its insane tempo.  "Purgatory Shuffle" and "Columbus Stockade Blues" are other standout tracks that prove Whitewater Ramble has found a new way to play traditional music that is fresh and invigorating.
