Current mood:  happy
Just wanted to send you all a Christmas message largely to say thank you for all your support especially during these recent and difficult months. As you know the great Paul Fox died but the lead up to his death was in itself a fitting tribute to his talent. We always found it almost impossible to re form,we had carried on without the force that was Malcolm Owen mainly because we loved playing music together and did'nt want to finish it all point blank.Ironic then, that it was Foxy's cancer that made our recent reformation happen.
"Integrity" was the word that kept cropping up in the early e mails to mr Rollins and I believe ,with his help ,we managed to keep it ..to the end.It was a pretty special gig for us as you can imagine and for those of you that were there, most will agree that it was a fantastic night.I had the privilege to watch the footage with Foxy one week before he died..here was the man that taught me my first proper bassline(H-Eyes)  sitting beside me unwell  but happy. The footage is good and it'll be launched at the Shepherds bush Empire Jan 25th  Henry will be there as will Ruffy and I.. all profits go to cancer charities. Thanks again  especially to all those bands, comperes, promoters, gear hire firms, rehearsal rooms, and any individual that helped us in any way to pull off the Academy gig. see you on the 25th  SEGS

Nice one Segs. Looking forward to the DVD. Can't be at the show but this old Forest Hill Punk will give you nice thoughts on the day of the DVD launch.

Foxy was a real guitar hero and is missed. I can still remember the first time we saw you guys perform. It was on a council estate in Peckham and you blew us all away.

Take care bud and pass on our best wishes to Dave.

Like I said in response to Ruffy's remarks after launching the website...We were all out there patiently waiting for you...I know it wasn't the same without Malcolm, bless him, but it was different. OK, "Animal Now" wasn't the best follow up album (although I love it, I never count "Grin & Bear It" as a true second album) but lets face it how many bands make a really successful no.2 ("Music for Pleasure" anyone?) Then what? the innovative, daring and, I believe the criminally undervalued "Rhythm Collision" You had great playing, intelligent writing/composing, breadth, variety...and integrity. Plus you weren't afraid to let your hair down. How many bands circa 1982/3 could you say that of? On the "Bustin' Out" CD you said something like 'how many people would be interested in the Ruts without Malcolm?' Well, lots of us were. The Ruts were bigger than Malcolm. But I know it must have been difficult - crap deal with Virgin and despite wiping the floor with the likes of the Clash and others, "Rhythm Collision" hardly sold by the truckload.

In later years when I was priviledged to meet and become friends with Paul ( who incidentally at that time, didn't even have his own copy of "Rhythm Collision" I had to tape it for him) I asked about a second coming for the Ruts, but the shop seemed fairly firmly shut on that score - though not on his part; which is why it was delightful to see Foxy's Ruts take off, (although I'm a great admirer of Lol - one of the most well-mannered students I ever taught and a GREAT drummer - ) there was always this thought that it really should have been Ruffy and yourself up there. It's just a shame it took his illness to make it happen.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing

I think its about time the history of popular music of the late 70s and early 80s be re-written to truly reflect the impact and influence of the Ruts.
