October 25, 2009 - Sunday
I just returned from the big wrestling roast/convention in New Jersey, with some new experiences/stories/perspectives to share. These type of things are always a blast (well, not always, but I wasn't at that one at the Cow Palace) for guys who have been around the business, as it allows the chance for the guys and ladies in the business to reaquaint with old friends, meet some legends of the past, and perhaps, most importantly, share exagerrated stories of their wrestling prime.

I had a wonderful talk with Luna, who I hadn't seen in years, met the legendary Billy Robinson for the first time, and had a chance to speak with Kevin Sullivan, who was so instrumental in my early career, for the for the first time since the Benoit deaths in June, 2007. I only regret that I didn't have more time to talk with everyone, from Marc Lewin, to Oliver Humperdink, to Terri Runnels...even Al Snow. I had the early  autograph session today - from 9:30 am until about 1 pm, and had to leave almost immediately after. It wasn't until I got home, and looked at some of the autographs that had been procured for me in the WWE Encyclopedia (for a kid who has been a great help to me, not for me, even though it is a hell of a book) that I realized how many great stars had been at the convention in the room right next to me without my knowing it. Guys like Road Warrior Animal, Ken Patera, Ken Kennedy, Nikolai Volkoff, Rikishi, Matt Stryker, Marc Mero and many others. Plenty of Divas/Knockouts, too, like Sunny, Lillian, Miss Jaquiline, Jackie Gayda, Awesome Kong, Tara, and Nidia, as well as the First Lady of Wrestling, Missy Hyatt...who I will write a little more on in a moment. Sorry if I excluded anyone, and hey, while I'm at it, sorry to Marc Mero, for being way too rough on him in my first book. Marc was always a good guy, and apparantly the only problem I had with him was that he had the audacity to land a good contact in WWE about a week after I arrived with just the promise of an opportunity. Really not his fault.

Of course there was a raost as well, with the guest of honor, the legendary Texas Bronco/Middle Aged Crazy/Chainsaw Charlie/Hardcore Legend Terry Funk as the roastee. This was the first roast I'd ever attended, and I can't honestly say whether I'd attend another one. Don't get me wrong, it was fun. I enjoyed at least some of each roaster's comments, and some of the night was genuinely hillarious. I especially enjoyed personal Terry Funk stories from so many of the guys, and in some ways, found the simple, non-comical approach of Kevin Von Erich and Dennis Stamp to be among the evening's highlights. Superstar Graham unveiled a beautiful portrait of Terry that he had created; a great piece of artwork by a great artist. And I was flattered just to be up there on the stage with guys who had been witnesses to so much of the Funker's legendary carer: JJ Dillon, Bill Apter, Mike Graham, Kevin Sullivan, King Kong Bundy, New Jack, and Missy Hyatt, who was a great sport all night and absolutely killed with some of her jokes.

But to tell you the truth, I'm not a big fan of some of the meanness that seems to go hand in hand with these types of things. I really enjoyed the three professional comedians who were part of the roast, but man, I'm not sure that JR's Bell's Palsy, Magnum TA's paralysis, or Patrick Swayze's recent death from pancreatic cancer (Patrick and Terry were good fiends) are the stuff on which good times should be made. I realize that the guys are up there in front of a difficult crowd, trying to make people laugh, but damn, there seems to be so many good targets available that going to those type of comedy depths seems to be unnecesarry.

Their jokes about me, for example, were great; very funny, completely harmless, and not mean spirited at all. The stuff about Missy Hyatt, though, may have been a little bit of overkill. Each comedian's Missy stuff, on it's own was well written and well received. Collectively, though, it seemed to be overkill, like piling on a quarterback long after the whistle blows. Maybe they could have gotten together, exchanged notes, and agreed to take it a little easier on her.

Or maybe I just look at Missy a little differently because I was basically a kid when I met her in either late 1986, or early 1987, either way, about 23 years ago. I was absolutely nobody in the business, and she was Missy F'N Hyatt; a major star and the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen - and yet, she was never anything but wonderful to me.

I loved those days, back when I wasn't making any money, but doing my best every single night, and soaking up wisdom like a sponge from all of the stars from Bill Watts's old UWF who came through Ohio and West Virginia, when Cowboy Bill was trying to take advantage of his powerful UWF television show to expand outside of his traditional Mid-South territory, which was showing signs of strain due to the faltering economy in the region.

Those shows with the UWF guys were the first signs I recieved that the wrestling stuff I'd gotten myself into might actually turn into something. And I only felt that way because of the encouragement I received from the stars who came through: Terry Taylor, Chris Adams, Buddy Roberts, Ice Man King Parsons, Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert, and the inimitable Missy Hyatt. Praise and advice from big stars was rare and appreciated. But kindness from a beautiful woman was an altogether new experience for me...and one I've never forgotten.

Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to have been in the company of so many beautiful women for so long. It's just kind of become an accepted perk of being part of WWE or TNA. I count so many of them among my good friends in wrestling, and as I mentioned in the last book I published, have counted on so many of the girls to help bring smiles to kids who don't often have reason to smile. And they have never let me down. I'm practically surrounded by the kindness of beautiful women these days. But Missy was the first.

Twenty three years is a long time. A long time since Missy walked into that little dressing room in Hundred, West Virginia in her full length mink, and got her first glimpse of the future hardcore legend; squatting on a toilet that had no actual stall - just a plain white bowl for all to admire. I guess after such a long time, it's only natural to start taking people for granted. I think the wrestling world as a whole has been taking Missy for granted for a while now. She's a colorful character with a colorful past, which makes her an easy target for jokes. And she takes the jokes well. But Missy herself is not a joke. As Terry Funk and I agreed today, she's practically an institution in our business. And she deserves to be treated as such.

That's a great read. I gathered from your last book, you were thought very well of by the women in wrestling. I can remember off hand you sharing your spotlight in a few big ways with Chyna, Lita, Melina, and now Daffney over the years--and a few memorable spots with Debra and one with Tori, as I recall!
Nice to see that you made it, but give credit to everyone along the way. I think it means a lot coming from such a respected figure.

It's weird..How Roasts are always something I wanted to attend..but yea..some jokes are too WAY over the top and ya find that at EVERY roast. Why some people have to go TOO far for a laugh is beyond me...maybe it's the shock factor they are looking for. I've heard stories..read stories and listen to Missy talk some really foul stuff on herself in the past... but like you, I hold her as a corner stone of the business! I grew up with her posters on my wall and my ( wishful thinking ) thoughts of my own...but would not have blasted her for others enjoyment...nor would I have ever brought up things about JR...Magnum or Patrick Swayze. I think if people find jokes like that entertaining then they have no respect for the person they are talking about!

All and All...I wish I was there!

I totally agree Mick I have to ask if you will ever come to spokane for an aperrance. I met you back in 01 i think at a signing for the autoboat speed show in portland OR and waitied in line for six hours. you were only supposed to stay until 1 but you stayed for 2 more hours when you looked exaughsted. i was just a kid then i wish people would understand what it means when an athlete of any sport takes time to spend with fans I will never forget it you signed my copy of have a nice day its getting worn but it is one of my prize keepsakes i intend to pass the hardcore legend on to my kids. I hope that hearing honest heartfelt memories and comments makes all the time you spend/spent away from your family a little more worth. Thanks again for just being real with your fans and all the memories

I'm glad you had a good time.  Kinda miffed at Missy Hyatt since she's somehow linked to the "20 Rules for Diva Afterlife" article which I found somewhat insulting.  If she's not linked to it I'll take it back.

But I wish I was personally there.  I might have had a "nerdgasm" in there with all the legends.

never wrote the article. I wrote a blog on my profile about it. The guy who wrote it sent it to me, I told him it sucked so he posted on his news site that I wrote it. He's the same guy who made up the story about Victoria being Benoit's mistress & tons of other BS

Well then anything that I had written to you about my personal opinion about you & the "20 Rules for Diva Afterlife" Missy let me say that I am so sorry.  When I heard about it I did write that "If" it was you.  Now that I know let me apologize and say that I'm sorry about anything that I did say now that I know the truth.  Unlike most columnists who write, I have the balls to apologize when I write or say something that can be completely wrong.  That and I can do a mean salsa dance!

I'll write about when I write my latest column which is a "Product Review" on a recently released DVD movie.

Thanks for the reply though.

Amazing blog post, Mick, always fun to read what you have to say. I wish there were conventions like the one you have just spoke about here in Scotland. The closest we ever really get to events like that is down in England, which I do plan on travelling down for in the future if possible.
Keep up the good work in TNA, Mick, and the great blogs. Always a pleasure to read. Take care.

It is great to read you had fun at the roast, catching up with old friends and acquaintances.  Personally roasts arnt my idea of a good time either.  It is one thing to poke a little fun and point out some character flaws in good taste (or semi good taste).  But for example the Owen Hart comment from last years roast was just insensitive and not funny at all.  Stuff like that and the comments about JR, Magnum, and Patrick Swayze are uncalled for at the roast of a legend like Terry Funk.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the event.  I can only imagine the stories others have to share about the Funkster after reading the abundance of ones you shared in your books.

Without having ever met him, my favorite Terry Funk story is from a radio interview he did a while back.  The interviewer was asking about "Chainsaw Charlie" and insinuating that it had to be Vince McMahon's wonky idea to stick a legend like Terry Funk with that, only to have Terry reveal it was in fact HIS idea the whole time!  Poking fun at himself like that really shows what great character Terry Funk has.

Mick,

Just my opinion but...

That was your best blog so far!  Not to impugn your other contributions, those are great too, but this one, THIS ONE, was heads and shoulders above.  :-)

About the mean aspect of roasting...

I always thought the same thing, how some of the comments seemed to be designed to hurt, rather then be funny.  Be funny to everyone else, and SHOCK the recipient.  Never knew why.  Until I thought more in depth about it (Thanks to your wonderful blog post).  Now, I may be wrong, and I am not an authoritarian on roasts in general, but maybe it isn't to unlike the hazing a young wrestler get's in the start of their career.  (It happens in groups OUTSIDE of pro wrestling, too.)  Everyone has to climb that ladder, and endure crap in some sort of proving ground, maybe a roasts hardcore comments can be best summarized with "You was hazed in the beginning to see what you got" and your being hazed now...BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU.

I am still trying to decipher the "why" mechanics, tho.  I'll let you know.

But Patrick Swayze...ouch.  That one seems a little hitting high...

I also have nothing but kind words for Missy. Meeting her in Memphis at the 1988 UAWF Convention and to find her so nice and down to earth. And also for her letting me publish an issue of GAG (we're talking old school here) which was a parody of a teen mag and called The Missy Hyatt Fun Club Magazine. She also mentioned my name on 3 separate occasions during the wraparounds of the Canadian version of the Main Event show. She is the original and only Hot Love Babe From Hell (and who I coined that term for) and I will always be a total mark for her.

And also interesting is the fact that the first time I ever saw Cactus Jack Manson live was on that same trip and at the Mid-South Coliseum. In terms of actual wrestlers - and I'm not kissing your ass here and have no reason to do so - but while I'm leaving a comment I must say that you were the coolest actual wrestler I've ever talked to which was actually quite a few times during the early to mid 90's. A couple things stand out - let's test your memory here - both of us trying to help Margaret Brown find her tooth on what was called a floor at the Flagstaff in Jim Thorpe, PA, and also driving around for what seemed like hours looking for our mutual friends after an ECW show in Philly. Always been happy for you since those days over the success you've had in your career.

Thank you very much for the comments and for sharing your memories. Wow, you go way back to 1988 - so when you say that I was the coolest wrestler you ever met, that covers quite a few years. I do remember looking for Margaret's tooth in Jim Thorpe...but only vaugely remember driving around after the show in Philly.

Glad you have some good memories of Missy. Thanks again for writing, and for checking out what I had to say.

Great blog Mick, very interesting read, also agree with some of the unncessary comments at a roast, I don't think it's really fair on JR and Patrick Swayze, there are SO many other targets that could be insulted in a more light hearted way and be more entertaning and humerous than that, as you mentioned your book, was wondering is there any update on your next one?  Also I'm sure a lot of us would love to hear your opinions on Hulk Hogan's recent signing to TNA (a suprise) and if your going to work with him?  That could be great if done right, cause it's two legends going at it, Hogan is still a huge name in wrestling and in general and this could be excellent for TNA, it's star power is increasing all the time, this could be a major move like when he went to WCW from WWE all those years ago, wish you and the company all the best.

unrelated to the post mick but i just heard the Have a Nice Day audio book and was a little disappointed at how cut down it was. I guess reading the whole thing aloud would have probably taken forever to do, but i just wanted to say that the terry funk and vince mcmahon impressions were great, but your impression of the ring announcer who gave you the truth or consequences hometown (the voice getting lower and lower) was the funniest thing ive heard in a while. are there any other audio books of yours available that youre aware of?

Yay, I finally got a chance to sit down and read this. Your blogs are always enjoyable to read. Anway, I wanted to say I like in general that you treat the divas/knockouts/etc with more respect than some other's viewpoints. Some of the stuff I've seen on the internet (whether it's from anonymous idiots with no life on sites or people who are in the business, I guess) is pretty cruel, especially since none of these people personally know the girls as friends, I'd think.

Well said Mick. I often wonder about the mean spirit of some of these roasts. Fair enough if you can take a joke but sometimes, as you say, they can be taken too far. It shocked me how various wrestling media outlets thought Scott Hall was out of order for taking a (albeit tipsy) stand against that comedian who was telling some sick jokes. Its great that you've taken a stand and stood up for Missy.

This was a GREAT blog. I love hearing any stories that you, or anyone really, may have. I'm sure the convention was really great too. They usually are. It's always really cool to see so many people around you that are such a big part of your life. I've always loved roasts myself but I do agree that some of them do go too far. Actually, mostly probably do. I think gentle jabs are fine but thing's like Patrick's death, Magnum's paralysis, and JR Bells Palsy are things that shouldn't be made fun of. I think we can certainly make fun of the said individuals like saying 'Patrick was an ugly woman in To Wong Foo' but making fun of the man so soon after his death may be a bit inappropriate. I'm not sure. I think everyone has their own line to draw and some don't care about it.

Anyway great blog and it was nice to see a Missy Hyatt blog that was actually positive! hopefully I too will be lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful women on a regular basis. =D
