Who Gives Kudos:

Monday, August 20, 2007
I was thinking- nay, pondering over how great it feels to be truly excited about something. Not the kind of mock euphoria you get when your favorite show comes on. And certainly not the kind of manic grin you give when assuring a small talker that things are going well. I'm talking flat out joy, tearing up at the thought, don't know what to do with yourself, ready to take on the world kind of excitement. Hopefully we've all been there a time or two but just as mysteriously as it appears it can vanish like viewing a mirage a step too close. You want it back immediately but your not sure how to get there. I paid my excitement some attention the other day and realized one thing (at least) that floors me and propels me at the same time: great songwriting. Yes, I will agree that this is simple and generally universal, but also a rarity to be sure. I was listening back to Ryan Adams' Love is Hell and became immediately aware that I haven't paid enough attention to these lyrics that I seem to sing unconsciously. As a side note, yes, I sing in the car; most unashamedly and unabashed. If you see me singing in the car as so many do, feel free to laugh or point because it will most likely go unnoticed; end side note. As a songwriter, when I experience songwriting at the top tier I generally have the urge to rush home and write some heresy of my own to add to the ever-growing pile. Will it ever be heard, distinguished, or even loved? In the moment it doesn't really matter. I don't pretend to know how to write good songs and I'd never feel comfortable teaching some workshop that boasted good technique. This moot point will not, however, dissuade me in those moments of excitement and inspiration from rejoining the marathon of writers in search of their perfect song. A few other mentions in the affecting me category as of late are: David Wilcox and The Brilliant Inventions (the new songs are killer; expect great things)

So that's one of mine, but I wonder what makes all of you sing? (sing=live with passion)

See you soon,

evan

Love Is Hell

Barry Manilow

I know you don't love him, but I promise you if you buy Matt Nathanson's new album, you'll love it. It's seriously his best, and it's just one that I smile every time I listen to it.
Also, anything by David Mead and The Damnwells always makes me so freaking happy.
The Brilliant Inventions kick ass. They nail songwriting in every aspect.
You're pretty decent, too. You need to get some new material before I can REALLY give my honest opinion.
And trust me, I will.

And I don't think I have to tell you, but I'll always point and laugh at you.
You can count on me for that.

Not only do I read these too, I also write them.
What makes me sing?...New love. Old love. Love that lingers. Secret love. Tainted love. Lessons learned in love. Love that hurts and love that makes me glad to be alive!
I dont point and laugh because Im too busy singing myself and watching my kids sing in the review mirror. No, we are not singing Row Row Row Your Boat, we are sing songs like the ones on the play list on my page.

Ah, "Love is Hell"...a ring tone my phone used to harbor in hopes of portraying my thoughts on love...until I really listened and thought about the lyrics. A man, let's say he has a little too much to drink, see's a lovely lady and is completely enthralled by her, but he's scared because as he proclaims "Love is hell"...a tainted fantasy". I have a point, I promise. In comparison to live is to love, yet we fear life. We fear joy, because we know that a valley will soon follow. What make,s me sing? To know that there is a perfect love that cast out all fear...a love that transcends all understand....a love that chases me when I run. A good beer is nice too. HA. Ok, so I'm sure this makes no sense, but my happy butt is take Percoset (sp) for an ear infection so not much of anything makes sense on this very day. Feel free to delete this. Yeah, ok. Good beer. Oh, and I am completely aware that car singing "love is hell" doesn't have much to do with your blog, but I wanted to relate it anyways. Thank you.

Well, soliloquy... You are a fantastic writer. Songs and blogs. You have a great ear (or pen) for words and how to piece them together like an intricately woven tapestry. I understand the writing process too. To you, it feels like all you are doing is just emotionally vomiting. But to someone else who comes accross it, it is like a shiny piece of art. I also understand that intrinsic joy that is coupled with your very soul when you find the perfect new cd to listen to. My friend and I call it crack. I have new crack rock for you to listen to. It seems that way. Now get to writin...
