About 17 more or less loose song ideas are tested in the studio these days.
Me and Tord are fiddling about, trying to solve some of the mysteries of
recording.
Sometimes it seems the cheapest gear brings the best results. I've stepped
into a new role this time, "recording engineer", trying to remember
everything everyone have told me and everything i've seen over the years,
trying out stuff i've thought about doing soundwise.
thinking about sound, alot of the records that come to mind when i think
about things sounding good, sound really bad, but come across in a very
special way, especially when theyre turned up loud.
Psychocandy, Joy Division stuff, Static Age, the Sonics.
The best sounding band to me is usually the Velvets,
especially some of the VU songs.
Then there's always been something special about the way the guitars
sound on Goo... how hard it is to hear all the details the first time you
hear it, everyone seems to forget the magic in that.
Then drum sounds, extremely challenging... thinking back and and forth it's
been tempting to go for a primitive approach, two ambient mic's and a
close mic'ed snare. the ambient mics close to the floor, in order to pick up the
low end, and not get too much of the cymbals.
A sixties neuman and u87 that we're borrowing seem to work alright.
then after some experimentation we put a cheap sm58 to the snare.
Enough about something i don't really know anything about, the only thing
i know is that some of the experts in this field bring extremely boring
results, especially if it comes to rock and roll music.
cheers,
