Aslut one of the best Hardcore Thrash bands out there today in the U.S., they are making some sick, raw, pissed off Hardcore music that mixes some Metal, Punk & Grindcore elements, their music is fresh & something new to listen & support for life, they are the new wave of Crossover hardcore & believe me they are here to stay, prepare yourself to witness something totally amazing & different motherfuckers, so Glenn tell me a little bit about the history of the band & some personal details of each member if you can homie?
The best way to explain how this band got together was actually by mistake. I got a bunch of friends together in late October 2007, to record a couple I had laying around. Its kinda of a twisting story about all the members and how this all came about. P.J. Maguire, had a lot of the same visions early on and recorded the drums tracks on "Ahole". Jason Swanson recorded the other songs we had at the time. Marty Myers former member of the 90's deathmetal band "Deadrott" handled the bass position and myself on guitar. Originally I was gonna do all vocals on all the tracks but that changed when we ran into Andrew Olson. Andrew came in dominated the songs with his unique style and chilling lyrics. He was definetly the missing link these songs needed very badly. We rehearsed for 3 weeks and hit the studio. Once the songs where recorded, the direction of the project started to form into more of a band right on the spot. I remember the air being very intense that night and from that moment we started to take this more serious. The songs really came out well considering the lack of money we had. Talk came up about making an album but it needed more tracks, so Justin Vandyke helped us finish 2 new tracks and we went back to the studio two weeks later. Musically speaking we wanted to capture alot of the music we listen to and mix up some different styles. I prefer alot of oldschool bands because I just relate better to them. The album was recorded live on November 30th 2007, with only a few additional tracks on guitar and gang vocals. After the recording was complete, we hooked up with Animosity Records, a DIY lable based out of Fullerton California. We started playing shows. Jason played drums at the first show but departed shortly after. Andrew and I called Justin again and he played from there on out. The toughest part through-out all this was, that despite the rehearsing, recording and playing shows Marty and Justin said, they were only available to help us out and get the ball rolling. So thats where we're at now and how things pretty much came together for this band.
Are you guys on tour lately, I only saw one damn show on your calendar & I was so pissed off because a band like Aslut deserves much more, you guys deserve to play with the big guys of many genres, what do you think about all this?
Thanks for that, and actually we played a good bit of shows around the area. We had about 5 months to play our ass's off before Andrew would be departing for Iraq so we utilized the time we had left together the best way we could. No worries though, when Andrew gets home, we will finish up all the logistics for touring that will be with some great bands very soon.
So ASLUT supporters keep one foot in the gutter for us and we'll be destroying stages for you very soon.
Any plans of doing several mini tour or big tour across the U.S. in support of your kick ass band or not, who would you like to open for or play with, explain?
Yes for sure, we are working on a two part (east/west) U.S. tour starting in 2009. We all have our favorites and heros that we want to tour with, but I would have to say touring with any oldschool band whether punk/hardcore/metal/thrash would be a huge honor for me personally. We look forward to touring very much and there's huge grin upon my face. Can't wait!
Have you guys thought about touring outside the U.S. to country's like Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Japan, Canada or the U.K., hundreds of people from those country's will shit their pants when they witness your abusive live show, they will be diving head first on the pit, damn it I want to see you live hahaha, tell us more?
Yes we are totally stoked about heading overseas and have been working with the booking folks and bands that are touring there now. Looking at the end of 2009 to really have everything ready. We are planning out 3-6 different legs between the next 2 years. Btw, see you when we get to Florida and we'll do some shows together.
Tell me Glenn why the fuck you guys don't have a bassist or drummer no more, my God I want to go out & scream shiiit because of that, you guys need to get those members asap, because your band will go far in life & will become legends of many scenes I can assure you that, tell us more?
Thats funny, I know what you mean. But first you have to understand, like I mentioned earlier, that when we all got together it was just for the moment and nothing more. No one expected to be in a band and working this hard. Marty (bass) has always said from the beginning that he could only help us out until we could find a permanent bassist to fill the position. Jason (drums) who also was unable to make a commitment early on was replaced by Justin who also was filling in until we could find someone with a flexible schedule to do touring and shows ect... So in all honesty we knew about these changes from the very beginning and now the time is here to find the new members to carry on the music, message, and vision of ASLUT. Andrew and myself are very grateful for the time and energy spent by Jason, Marty, and Justin and wish them all the best with personal lives and for hanging in there and playing countless shows with us. Much respect! As to finding new members, we are looking around to see who's out there and want to talk to anyone who wants to be a part of ASLUT. But just like many other bands facing new member situations, finding musicians that can tour like we want can be really difficult and stressful.
You guys have a one of a kind, brutal, super fucking sick cd entitled "From Birth To Beast", wow my brother, that cd is still banging in my mind, it's that good hahaha, those that don't like it are lost in another world or they are posers, because anyone into good Hardcore, Punk & Metal needs this in their collection, period, tell us what you think of this?
Thank you! Hell yeah!! We hear that a lot and hope to hear that for a long time. I personally listen to it everyday. I really like listening to it. It really is an accomplishment that we all did together. There's alot of memories that I flashback on when I hear the album. I crank it up as loud as it can go so I can piss of my neighbors...haha just kidding I love my neighbors, but no really thank you again because that really means alot to us. The feedback and buzz has been non-stop, so if you don't have a copy, hit us up right away and we'll get it out to you asap!!! You can count on that...
The album title was fairly easy to come up with. I've been saying it for years and it has two meanings. Obviously we used the title along with the cover artwork to illustrate our counrty as a whole in these tender times we all are facing around the world, and also it has meaning of when the band was formed I could see this title in my head because of the way we all worked together. It reflects ASLUT to the fullest, a band that came from nothing and with a lot of hard work and heart we hope to reach as many people as possible and get them our music.
I saw some comments that you guys are going to release a live cd, am I right, when it's coming out, have you ever thought about the possibility of doing a cd/dvd, that should be killer?
Actually that may infact be what happens. A cd/dvd has been discussed with Jason at Animosity Records since early January of 2008. We have to check out all the footage that has been taped over the past 7 months and see just how much we could use. I totally like the idea of cd/dvd but I think we should wait until we get some touring footage to use. As far as the live album release, it will only have a limited pressing for ASLUT fans or vinyl collectors and is still being discussed for a release date. Maybe late October or early November but not sure yet.
Are you guys creating new music, if so what can we expect about it, can't fucking wait to have another killer release soon, any plans of future releases like your 2nd studio cd, maybe some splits, a cover songs albums or anything like that, also you guys are with Animosity Records which is a very cool Label, are you guys happy with it, are you going to continue working with them in the future or not, or maybe go DIY independent, tell us more?
The second album has some killer songs and idea's ready but we won't record them just yet since there is still a hell of alot of work to do with our first release. But just like the first album, the new tracks will make your ears bleed and the energy is explosive. Andrew has mentioned doing a cover song but thats something we'll have to discuss with the new members. Animosity Records has been good and we are grateful. We have and always been a DIY band that makes sure to get this album out to everyone that wants it at no cost to them. We've made sacrifices with our personal lives to make sure that everyone gets a copy despite the thousands spent on shipping cost. But like I said we don't care about the money as long as people are interested in getting it, and we will get it to them.
You guys are supported world wide through Magazines, radio stations, zines, forums & much more, it's great when someone tells me man I heard Aslut in Japan or Mexico & you go like wow, Myspace have helped a lot, thank you God for the internet hahaha, what can you tell us about all this are you happy & proud of all this achievements, explain?
No question, the internet and myspace are one hell of a tool. We really dig hearing from fans all over the world and everyday there is plenty of mail and opportunity presented from all kinds of people and places thats keeps us busy. No doubt, we are more than happy and proud so far with everything and we will not stop. Its been a real privilege and the words I have cant truely express how we feel about the friendships we've been made so far all over the world. Thats the most important part of all this for ASLUT and this band will be here for a very long time.
2008 has been a killer year for the Hardcore/Thrash beast known as Aslut, you guys have been playing local shows non stop, have played in a couple of cool Fests, have your debut album out & selling extremely well, have conquered many country's, your music is heard from coast to coast & thats a privilege, tell us Glenn whats left to prove or achieve for Aslut in whats left of 2008 & in the near future?
Yeah man, it has been a kill year for the band and we're just getting started. We'll just keep plugging away, keep doing what we're doing, one step at a time. No need to rush is what we believe. Keep it real and keep it fun. We just make sure we get it done. As for the rest of 2008, we just wanna concentrate on the release of From Birth To Beast and keep the units flowing. Were gonna add 4 more tracks to it and release it on vinyl. Lets see what else, there are several compilations coming out before the end of 2008 and were stoked about being a part of them. We just finished a track with Mike Williams lead vocalist of The Agony Scene, working out splits with several bands and just finishing up tour details. One band we're personally looking forward to doing a split with is Bullet Treatment, check them out! Oh shit I almost forgot about the merch that should be arriving anytime. We have been waiting to have shirts and stuff for a long time. It seems like forever. We are stoked!
Thank you so much Emmanuel for hitting us up to do an interview with your zine and mag. I know how busy you are and we are very thankful.
As always keep it real my friend and hit me up when you get to Florida. I know a few good watering holes there.
THANKS FOR ALL BROTHER GLENN, KEEP IT REAL HOMIE, PEACE & RESPECT ;).
