This
debut effort from The Flips is a good garage-pop record utilizing the
harmonies and storytelling lyrics of classic girl groups.
The
band consists of six girls from various Milwaukee-area bands, including
Wendy Norton from Plexi 3 and Natalie Clark from The Tuff Bananas both
handling guitar and backup vocal duties.
The a-side, "That Girl
Stacey," is a story of boyfriend stealing and backstabbing, as a guy
named Bobby (nice name) gets stolen away from one of the girls by that
good-for-nothing Stacey. The lyrics tell a straightforward story, like
The Shangri-Las did with hits like "Leader of the Pack." The story is
interrupted a few times by a catchy chorus, which is true to girl-group
form. Musically, it mixes obvious 1960's influences with classic
powerpop from the 1970's.
Two equally sweet, piano-driven
b-sides called "I Still Wanna Be His Girl" and "Baby (It's Gonna Be
Alright)" are also superb. The latter is especially pretty, as lead
vocalist Betsy Heibler's doubled-up vocals sound best on this track.
This
is not your typical garage-rock-played-at-punk-speed band, but it's
okay to take a break from that formula for about six minutes while you
put on this record.

The Regular Express
Fresh out of Brew City, The Flips are a new 6 piece girl group that mix
the songwriting style of 60's groups like Martha & The Vandellas
and the lo-fi aesthetic of the Vivian Girls. Unlike the Vivian Girls,
however, these girls are all class. Just check out their Brady-esque
record cover! The band recently released their debut, a 7" called "That

Punk
rock Port Huron resident Dale Merrill has put out a third single via
his label, Bancroft Records. The music on this piece of vinyl comes
from The Flips, a group of talented Wisconsin punk chicks who all play
in various other bands like Plexi 3 and Sugar Stems. Their debut
seven-inch, conveniently titled Meet The Flips, flips the script on the
current noise-pop trend.
“I Still Wanna Be His Girl” is a
slice of Del Shannon R&B mixed with something that would come up on
a Bubblegum Motherfucker comp. “I Still Wanna Be His Girl” is girl
group songwriting at its best. This couldn’t sound any better if Mary
Weiss had sung it in ‘65. “I Just Don’t Know Where I Stand” bleeds a
kickass intro into a Little Richard-esque piano slide — always a great
way to start a track. Nice harmonies, mangled jangly guitars and the
handclaps are all great touches. Throw in a fantastic chorus and
perfect pop hooks and you have one hell of a track. “That Girl Stacey”
is surf twang standing at the altar with basic '70s-styled powerpop and
fantastic doubled-up vocals. Some say there's nothing new about what
The Flips are doing, but they're a fine alternative to the Tascam
