Breakdown/Breakthrough: August 2009 Double Mix

First we went to Detroit… and that’s where all the trouble began.
Detroit warped my fucking head this year. After 2009’s DEMF I was
listening to music in a new way for the first time in years. Everything
was new and fresh. A month later, and after three years of constant
elation, depression, hell and highwater in the trenches of the dance
music industry, I decided to abandon Chicago. We played 2 going away
shows, one with the Advent and one with DJ Pierre. After the Pierre
event Jason Garden suggested offhand that we have an afterhours in his
laundry room of all places.
And then something magic happened. Right time, right place. Revelation. Whatever happened in Detroit had stuck.
What followed was the most curious combination of artistic
transformation and near total nervous breakdown on the soil of the
greatest state in the union, Kentucky. Then last weekend we randomly
threw one of the best undergrounds I’ve ever been to in 18 years of
dance music. We called it Wigwams and it was so good I could have
cried. Garden and Rupert came and stayed almost a week. We all slumber
partied at Kurt’s. It was great and we all felt restored. I’ve never
heard better sets out of anyone that played and that goes for me. I’m
still walking on air.
So, in tribute whatever this thing I’ve been going through is and
especially to the people of Jason Garden’s laundry room and the
thrashers at the Wigwams underground that brought it all home, I
dedicate this double August mix. Both of these events will remain
powerful markers of transformation in me as a person, DJ, listener and
I would imagine, as a producer over the next months.
It’s not been an easy change and the months to come will be marked
with a lot more scorched earth, sex, drugs, and rock & roll, but I
have a feeling it’s going to be worth it. In spite of everything, this has been the best summer of my life in
a lot of ways. I’m so grateful. So happy. So scared. So in love with
dance.
