Hardcore screamer turned folk-rocker Jake Brennan? Fronting a sleazy, sex-and-drugs-obsessed party band? With help from half of Read Yellow and Mac from Big Digits? It shouldn't work — hell, it shouldn't even exist. And yet here are Bodega Girls, playing a twisted version of throwback-jersey disco, with nods to Donna Summer and the Jackson 5. Over a stammering Chic-meets-Clash backbeat, Brennan sings about a Lexington white girl who enjoys walks on the wild side involving the Western Front, snorting coke, blowing the DJ — and, of course, hooking up with, uh, African-Americans. The punch line is that Brennan loves black dudes too: "Michael [Jackson], Shorty [Long], Tito, and Jermaine," as Read Yellow's Michelle Kay coos during the breakdown, plus "Marvin [Gaye], Bobby [Brown], and Dirty Rudy Ray [Moore]."

There's a concept behind this thing, too: the Bodegas aim to be a musical manifestation of hedonism, but their operating principles are all about restraint: among their self-imposed "rules" are that they refuse to play clubs, and that they only write songs in the studio -- one per session, with the idea that anything that takes longer to develop probably wasn't worth writing in the first place. Here we have a band, then, devoted both in theory and in practice to the singular pursuit of instant gratification.

So no word on when you'll be able to see them live, but keep an eye peeled to their MySpace page for updates -- and while you're there, check out "Primetime Sexcrime," which led our old pal Cami to christen them a "neo-soul MGMT," although we've been known to describe it as a cross between mid-period Dylan and Junior Senior.
