Current mood:  sad
Category: Friends
Roller coaster-like day today: got a few major chores taken care of and was feeling a sense of accomplishment;
Then enjoyed some time with my guest from out of town, a close friend from the old neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, on his final day here;
A nice home cooked meal with hearty conversation that included my young children;
And finally, a Skype call to my sister followed by a conference call to one of our other childhood friends that I haven't talked to in too long, only to find out that another of our running buddies from my old neighborhood was killed in a freak accident at his home today!

I've said this before - It's never too soon to contact the people who mean or meant something to you. Life is far too short.  We have the greatest opportunities with the best tools ever to do it with.  Use them.

I missed one.

My condolences on the death of your friend. I concur with what you have written about how we need to seize any opportunities that come up. I was reminded of this when I lost a childhood friend in a horrific accident nearly two months ago. I'm only now getting back into the regular routine. I may never get over it completely, so I've decided to just get through it.

Thanks Don.  It was very consoling to have my one buddy visiting with us, who also grew up together with this friend who passed away, to find this news out with me.  Especially since I have not talked with these old buddies, much less gotten together, for so long.   Uncanny coincidence.

Hey Kenny, very sorry to learn of your loss (and your visiting friend's).  Never an easy time, and even the best words seem to fall short of filling the void for those who have made a mark on our lives.  Wishing you peace and prayers for Doug's family and friends in this difficult time.

Thank you too, Denise and Mark.
But I feel a little guilty for all the condolences I'm getting here and on FB.  I am sad and feeling a little less complete with the loss of my old friend, but it's not unbearable or anything like that.  I'm not really "grieving" as I'm sure his family is.  As a matter of fact, it's quite the opposite.  I feel it's rather healthy and purifying to go through times like these.  I cried some about it last night and as odd as it may seem to many people, it was fulfilling.  More and more these days I don't think crying is something people give much thought about, but in my opinion, it's an emotion that really needs to have an outlet every once in awhile at least.  I was happy to be able to cry for my friend for a little while.  I am also very fortunate to have a family that surrounds me with a healthy support system and respects the fact that I have a sensitive side. : )  Thank you for your kind support as well.
