So...  I've been searching for people who used to go to Phases in the 80s.  That'd be Kevin Parr's club on Topanga Canyon Blvd.  Looking back, it was so ahead of its time.  Punk rockers, death rockers, draq queens, gay, bi...  It was my life!  Who out there remembers the good times with lip synch goodness starring Rosie, David, Clay, Viva, Billy Woolsey, and the rest?

Samantha "I'm All The Rage!"

Same demographic, different geographic, but I used to go to Marilyn's Backstreet, in Pasadena; Network, in Glendale; and Odyssey and 321 on the Westside.  Before I was jaded, when a 40 ouncer would get me drunk, and acid and mushrooms were all the rage.  I can't party like that anymore, I certainly can't fit into any of my old get - ups anymore, but the music, oh the music...

first of all...  acid and mushrooms were all the rage back then, and apparently, they've been replaced by you!

secondly...  i was at 321!  i know for sure i drove my silver caprice classic over there on august 20, 1986 to celebrate my 16th birthday.  fell in love with some hoodlum.  got over it real quick.  LOL

sadly, i never made it to odyssey before it burnt down, but i think i went to marilyn's with my friend who was in a depeche mode cover band.  ha ha.

shit - kids these days have no idea!

ish, I never made up to Phases, but I did frequent the Odyssey, Marylins, and the Network. As a matter of fact I was at the closing night for Marylins, now its a panda express. The fire marshal had stopped people from going in and I walked passed everyone through the exit. Wow the Odyssey, NO ONE I talk to remembers the Odyssey. That was wicked place to get lost. Thanks for conjuring up some good memories.

Long comment here...

Hello!

Scott Kathan here...not sure who remembers me or not. I was in the Adam and the Ants lip-synch for "Physical" and "Desperate But Not Serious". Former NeuRomantic that LOVED Duran Duran, Soft Cell, Ultravox, Visage, OMD, Classix Nouveaux, Japan, David Sylvian...(well, I still do!)

I used to go to Phases ALL the time; Wednesday through Sunday. I first had a Plymouth Barracuda, and then a white convertible MG. And I remember almost everyone that went there, along with last names as well.
That's what happens when you have a photographic memory (it's a CURSE)!

I remember Lorena (the Soft Cell girl), Clay (loved Nina Hagen), Billy Woolsey (used to date my ex, Nikki Andrzejewski), Scott Williams, Ryan Lovesee, Roxanne Reza, Kevin Parr (the manager; sadly deceased; http://www. edmplanet. com/forum/archive/index. php/t-44. html), Paul Froiland, Shadow (Kenn Gold), Kristine Taylor, Leslie Palmer, Dan Roberts, Scott Fraley (in WA state), Tony Russell the DJ (also in WA state; saw both of them about 10yrs ago), David Tostado, Veronica (top center girl in the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video), Jill, Nick Napoli, Dan Carlin, Dominic Goglia (also VERY sadly deceased), Quentin Roberts, Rabbit (Tim McDaniel), Rebel, all of the Speedsters, Michelle Siskiyou, Donnie Soeder, Linda Soeder, most of the Mods, Thumper, Johnny, Robert Arquette, Mike Walters, Corey, Kerry Knerr, Kent (owned a green VW hatchback), Sarah Houston, Grace Khajerian, Sarah Houston, Greg Sharp, Pat the bartender, Danny the bouncer, Dina, Dail Dawson, and SO many more.

I forgot all about Rosie, though... Wow! I can see her dancing in my mind's eye.

Also went to Dillon's, Sherman Square Roller Rink (that would have dancing on Fridays) Hot Trax, Rage, Seven Seas, Cathay De Grande, 321, Odyssey, Club F*ck, Club Soda, Club Lingerie, Rebar, The Bog, Xenon West, The Metro, etc..etc...

Phases, Canoga Park, California
'78 or '79 to 1985. Owned by the same people that owned the Odyssey in Los Angeles (Chris Cox and Scott Harvey, along with DJ Chuck E Starr). This was the largest of the Valley night clubs of the 80's. Starting out as a "punk" club, the music followed right into the 80's wave scene. Managed by Kevin R. Parr, with DJ's Tony Russell, Mike "Michael Dair" Sommer, Matt Jackson and a few others (Shana) that slip my mind from the early days. This place jumped almost every night! Not a very big club, it had a patio pool/game room and video monitors pumping in MTV, (the only place most of us could see it). Phases hosted new wavers for 14 to 94, dancing to all your favorite 80's ditties.
"Phases, the Valley's hottest new music dance club- wants youuuuu!"

Nice to see that people still remember. Now that I live in SF, I get to see a MUCH more active 80's scene.
Still spinning vinyl, (i have every record that Phases and KROQ ever played) and loving it!

well I am Kenn Gold (Shadow) that Scott Alan Dean Spectre Kathan refers to (why I remember all the names Scott used is beyond me).

I am in contact with Paul Froiland, Rabbit (Tim) and Laura Heller.
Rebel (Tim also), I believe is the Manager of the Derby now, or at least he was (I think he was married to the owner?)

The Soft Cell girl was Loretta, and I have always wondered where David and Clay ended up in life.

I have been trying to locate Dan and Brett Roberts and Quinten Roberts (not related to Dan and Brett).

Even now at 40 years old, when I dance I know that it is still a tad reflective of copying Rosie. So strange.

Since I used to tape all of the Lip Sync Contests, I still have copies of most of them.

Ahh, the memories...

Like Samantha, I'm a same demo, different geo...

Around the time you were talking about, I was living in Colorado... used to go to Thirsty's on their New Wave nights... The Piranha Room, Norman's, Pogos up in Boulder... concerts out at Red Rocks.

Moved here to San Diego in '88. Worked at the Piranha Room here, as well as The Metro. Also remember Romper Room and the Pink Panther.

Yep, we're old... LOL!

Wow! Do I remember the place. It was the summer of 1980, I just graduated from Canoga Park H.S. down the street, when I started busing tables there and even served beer behind the bar...and I was only 17. I wore my white Phases T-shirt with the two blue rings crossing eachother, one ring with a cross at one end and the other ring with an arrow (male/female) along with my tight OP shorts. Kevin (the manager) would try to hit on me, but I wasn't gay, so I never gave in. Once he caught me with a girl in the storage room and yelled at me to get out! He was a cool guy. He would even let me put people names on the entry guest list so they wouldn't have to pay. He was always seem stressed out, especially when the owners came to the club. That's probably what made him a good manager. I only hung out there for that summer before going on to college, but my friend, David Hukkenen, became a fixure there and would give me updates about the place for several years. Looking back at it, the club was my little new wave version of studio 54.

Speaking of Rosie... I went with her to Peanuts one night to watch the drag show and dance til 2. I had a crush on her like you wouldn't believe. Maybe it was because she did the hottest Pete Burns lip synchs. LOL I recall her driving us back to the valley and listening to some radio station playing High NRG. I forgave her for that. And, somewhere, I have photos of David out of drag, in my backyard playing with my dog Popcorn. Gotta find those...

I don't remember Club Phase, but I most certainly remember Marilyn's Backstreet! Amazing part of my youth. I was in the band Negative Image, and we had some damn good shows there! For those who miss the 80's I think you'll be happy to see our reunion show in 2010. Details are coming. Bring all your good memories with you. This will be a flashback nite to remember. Hope to see all the familiar faces...
