Hey all,
Ok, so you may or may not know that I got my start in music in the '80's. I played bass guitar and recorded several records with a couple different hardcore punk bands. One was called Deep Wound, and it was my first band that I started with my friend Lou in high school. Over the last few years stuff from those bands has been creeping into books and movies. The 'American Hardcore' book had a picture of my other band, Outpatients, and then so did the 'American Hardcore' movie. There was another book called 'All Ages' and another one called 'The Improbable Rise of Grindcore and Death Metal'. So today I was wandering around a Barnes and Noble and walked by a shelf and there facing out was a book called The Encylcepedia of Punk Rock. So I checked it out and of course it has all the great punk bands like the Ramones, the Clash, Black Flag, Minor Threat etc and surprisingly enough it also included Deep Wound!
So I thought it was kinda cool that my first band with my high school buddies is in there. I would have never thought that we would be even mentioned 20 something years later. Granted J and Lou have gone on to do big things in music, it's still cool we have a spot in there. The book is written and put together by Brian Cogan with a forward by Penelope Spheeris and published by Sterling. It's at some local bookstores and all the chain stores like B and N and Borders. Check it out, if nothing else maybe it'll turn you on to some punk bands you never heard of or ones that you forgot!
Cheers,
Scott Helland
