LIVE NEWS

Andrew Liles and Steven Stapleton are thrilled and somewhat astonished to be invited to play two concerts with the legendary Mali musician Boubacar Traoré. We are immensely looking forward to working with Boubacar on such a remarkable and unlikely collaboration.

More about Boubacar can be found at the following links

…and below is a  brief biography…

Biography

b. Kayes, Mali. Traoré first rose to local prominence in the 60s, performing on Radio Mali, where his songs "Mali Twist" (an adaptation of the then fashionable Western dance style) and "Kayeba" (a call to all Malian exiles to return to their newly independent homeland) became hugely popular. To supplement the meagre wages he earned as a radio performer, Traoré worked as a tailor, a salesman and an agricultural agent for the government. In the late 60s he gave up music in order to concentrate on his governmental role. When his elder brother (also a well-known musician) died, it was assumed that it was Boubacar Traoré who had passed away. However, in 1987 he re-emerged to make a television appearance and a recording session for Radio Mali that resulted in the release of a locally popular cassette. UK radio broadcaster Andy Kershaw obtained the cassette and it was subsequently issued by Stern's Records on vinyl, as Mariama. The album introduced audiences outside of Mali to Traoré's plaintive vocals, intricate acoustic guitar playing and ballad style (a contrast to the more commonly heard, abrasive "jali" style of Malian music).

Traoré moved to Paris, France and was invited to the UK where he toured and also recorded a second album for Stern's. Kar Kar (his nickname back in Mali) was just as laid back and wistful as its predecessor, further highlighting a style not too far removed from the mellower end of country blues. He became a regular on the world music festival circuit and in 1996 released Sa Golo on France's Label Bleu, featuring accompaniment from calabash player Baba Drame. Macire, released three years later featured backing from Habib Koité and his group Bamada and contained "Kar Kar Madison", a belated follow-up to "Mali Twist".

OTHER NEWS

Recently Sven Erik Fuzz-Kristiansen better know to some as ‘Maniac’ visited Andrew Liles at his new studio in West Yorkshire, UK where the mastering of the new Skitliv album was completed.

Andrew Liles is also adding audioscopic details, mixing and mastering the debut Sehnsucht album.
Sehnsucht is -
MANIAC: All Vocals, Sound-Design, Guitar
VIVIAN SLAUGHTER: Bass, Sax, Background Vocals
INGVAR: Guitars

ANDREW LILES : Sound-design, FX and electronics

Please go to myspace for further details –

Further to this Andrew Liles is working on a side project with Maniac that will appear later this year. ‘det skjedde noe når du var i Belgia’roughly translated as ‘Something happened while you were in Belgium’ looks certain to be a very interesting release and should raise an eyebrow or two. The Metal community may or may not be surprised to hear Maniac venture into such ambiguous musical territory.

NEW IN THE SHOP

‘Monohallucinatory Mountain’: the monophonic CD version of ‘Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain’ now available

To celebrate C93's appearance at the Leipzig Wave-Gotik-Treffen festival, Coptic Cat have created a MONOPHONIC version of the album. The album comes in a jewel case, has a full-colour 20 page booklet with all the text and fantastic—and utterly different—photos of all the band.

All the tracks have been renamed for this album, and are printed, as is the text on the cover of the album, in a German Blackletter Gothic font.

To our ears the album sounds very different in mono; more savage, harder, more overwhelming.

Track titles: 1) Tyranny of Stars; 2) Small of Destroyer; 3) Oh Microwave, Oh Galaxy Kill; 4) Six or 3 Suns; 5) Rise of the Butterfly (We are not the Disco); 6) Murderer; 7) Queen Morning (Kissing Rain, Killing Stars).

1000 copies have been manufactured. £11.50 plus postage and packing. Go to the shop to order...

FORTHCOMING ATTRACTIONS

Andrew Liles has created a sideline project called ‘MONSTER’. The ‘MONSTER’ banner will be a continuous, interrelated, cross referenced and rolling project that will employ the ‘MONSTER’ theme in some way. It will run concurrently with other Andrew Liles releases.

‘MONSTER’ started earlier this year with the ‘GONZO’ download and t-shirt and recently two button badges. Next up will be ‘DREAMY GORGEOUS MONSTER’ a book and CD due to be released later this year. Following the book will be ‘THE PHANTASMOGORICAL MONSTER THEY CALL TOKOLOSHE’. This will be a DVD using images from the book that have been animated by the perpetually talented Michael Tang and mixed in to 5.1 by the wonderful Freida Abtan. This will be followed in 2010 by the new full-length studio album from Andrew Liles ‘TO KILL THE MONSTER THAT FEEDS YOU’. Other plans are germinating and who knows what the ‘MONSTER’ will metamorphose into next….
