BY DENIS HILLER, Public Relations Specialist

Recently, a potential client inquired about my PR services. After exchanging a few e-mails it became apparent that he was looking for a specific type of experience that I don’t currently have.

Rather than beating around the bush, I told him that if that specific type of experience is crucial to his company’s selection of a PR consultant, they should probably go with someone else. While I certainly sold myself and my abilities in our e-mail exchanges, I felt it was important set realistic expectations.

I’d rather risk losing a client by being honest than disappoint them later by being dishonest.

You have truly reinforced the essential role which honesty plays in this field.

Jenn, my pleasure. Most of the publicists I know also strive to be honest with both clients and the media.

It really is good to know that while several consultants do ultimately strive for personal gain, a large number are dedicated to maintaining the positive image which can so easily be shattered.

Positive image and personal gain go hand in hand. In the long run, it's the only way to run a successful business.

Honesty is the best policy and because of your ethical ways, that client will remember that and word of mouth is our best PR advertisment for our services! Keep up the good job, i love your blogs!

Michelle, I completely agree. In fact, the potential client wrote a response to me saying he appreciated me being forthcoming about not having the specific type of experience he is looking for. Although we probably will not end up working together, that positive connection is gold.

Couldn't agree with you more. And Helping Heroes above makes a great point too. Honesty pays off in the long run. We may lose a client now, but these principles define what we are in this field, and someone somewhere appreciates that, and we only stand to gain from our values.

Well since we write for real solid stuff, its only natural that if u lie in the media they ll eventually find you. And if they find you lied your career is pretty much over. Honor, loyalty and many other values are gone in this era. I think our generation can make the difference and bring them back. I could literally write a whole article about this but I think the meaning is pretty much obvious. They used to say back in the Samurai days: We live by the Bushido, we die by the Bushido. And this is a happy life...

I like that quote. A little harsh, but point well taken.

Our industry is insane. I'm so proud to know that there are people in PR who know when to say NO. It's so tempting to take on an unfamiliar client and manage their expectations. I love that quote by Socrates by the way, it's inspiration for us all. Keep up the good work.

PS Great work news today, one of my clients has been looking for an emcee for our 10 year event (we've been looking for months!) and I finally booked us a talented young news anchor from KCAL9/CBS2!

Thanks Becky! Likewise, I appreciate you joining the discussion here.

It's nice to see this blog post turning in to one of the most commented on. I'm glad that others value integrity and honesty in their PR work.

Likewise, PR props to you my friend!

That's amazing. It takes a lot of guts to do something like that. I can't count how many people I know who have pretended to have experience just to get a job ( I guess they thought they could "Fake it till they make it"). Normally the lack of experience comes out in the end.

I"m so with you. That was smart and saved you the hassle too of trying to figure it out instead of doing it as second nature. I've actually told a couple of potential clients that and I referred them to 3 other publicist that work with those industries best. Kudos...

I DIG UR BLOG
