I was at a mixer for Silicon Valley professionals recently, and after exchanging business cards, someone told me: "You need a website." To which I replied, "I don't feel I need a website at this point. All of my clients came through referrals. If people really want to learn about me they can check out my MySpace page [ http://myspace.com/silicon_valley_publicist ]."

To which he replied, "You need it [a website] for branding purposes." What does that even mean? Do you have a website? How has your website helped you?

That guy is right. MySpace isn't professional. People that are looking for PR services won't search MySpace, they'll search for a website to see your previous work. Also, it's much easier to view a website first instead of having to call and then look at your portfolio. There are some pretty good books out there on Public Relations and the internet. That's probably where I'd start if I were you.

Rachel, thanks for your well thought out feedback. I'm still conflicted because if you search my name or certain other terms, my MySpace comes up. Additionally, as I mentioned, I landed all of my clients through my network of professionals and friends. A portfolio could be posted here and part of that is my blog.

I'm afraid I have to jump on the bandwagon and agree that you do need a site. Some people are simply not into MySpace, and it may give the impression that you're smaller and less experienced than you really are.

MySpace just isn't a professional place. It has a bad reputation and I don't know why someone would go to MySpace to find PR services. With the economy the way it is, people are going to want to know they aren't wasting money on PR. Your MySpace page doesn't give someone looking for PR services enough information to make an informed decision to hire you. You don't state where you went to college and what you studied (people want to know that you've been trained in what you're doing). You give a brief history of what you've done PR wise, but as far as I can tell you have no results. Yeah, maybe you got your clients in some national media, but what did it do for them? Maybe you have all of this information in hardcopy form, but people aren't wanting to waste their money right now and they're going to be looking for results that they can see.

I'm so intruiged by the responses on here because I posted the same question on LinkedIn and had vey different responses:

Jim: "Depending on what you do, the need for a web site is becoming less and less important. With the rise of social media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, it is now possible to publish a profile, complete with recommendations on a well established platform.

These sites also offer excellent SEO.

Don't get me wrong. A website can be very useful depending on how you're going to use it but the established social media sites can offer a substitution for some.

My website is basically a portfolio. It is through the social media sites that I make my contacts and network.

Jenifer: "No...everyone does not. My aunt wanted to sell her janitorial services (on a small scale)and begged me to produce a site for her...I said "no".

Her clientele is based on pounding the pavement. Why obtain a site for 3 people to look at it per month.

Offer up your LinkedIn page address for a professional site."

Sebastian: "Denis. You do NOT need a website. I love your myspace page. Great job."

I actually started a blog in a pr site since its a great place for others to check how well you can communicate. As they say if you can write a Thesis about Dande you can sure write a press release. So check this out: http://ampatzispr.prblogs.org/
