Don is has always been the best writer in the band. Here is an obituary he wrote for us:

With my day free to do nothing other than dwell upon tonight's show, the death rattle of 6 years of turmoil and hard work, I decided a final statement should be in order. Not that I anticipate a huge amount of interest, truthfully its more of a selfish exercise in sentimentality, and in the end probably a poor catharsis in comparison to that which I've always found in performing with my three comrades. So if you don't like this, fuck you, I'm doing it for myself (and the band), just like we've always written our music and played our shows.

Which brings me to the heart of the matter. From the start we've taken our work seriously, and maintained a healthy amount of pride and thoughtfulness in what we produce. That failure to compromise is most likely whats brought us to this breaking point, and though I don't regret any of it, it has been frustrating to see our fanbase consistently waning while from my point of view the quality of our work has been consistently waxing. What I'm saying is, "It's all your fault".

I'm currently lost in melancholy and negativity about the whole situation, but by no means was it all a loss. Yes, perhaps all our sacramento shows in 2009 have been an exercise in futility (ironically tonight's will break that streak, and ok we did get to open for Obits) in addition to nearly all the tours we've done, but gains have been made. Great friends far and wide, and fans few and far between, have made it more than worthwhile, despite the few bands and record labels we've been ashamed to associate with. I'll leave it at that and not get any more specific regarding the who's who of friends and fuckers. We've learned that integrity is a lost cause if you hope to succeed in this industry of snakes and bastards, and loyalty is bought with cold hard cash, and is dependent exclusively on the continual flow of aforementioned cash. Which we have never had.

Just know that ive enjoyed it more than anything in my young life (probably even more than sex), so this is can only be the end of Bright Light Fever. We've got no plans for the future, until two weeks ago we were planning our tour in october. But I know I can speak for at least one of the other members of the band when I say that I like it too much, despite all the debts and failings, to call it quits and get a real job and become a grown ass man. That just sounds horrible.

I'm kinda sad you guys are calling it quits. Since I heard one of your songs on a cd I got two years ago I got hooked. Well I'm just letting you know that I will never stop listening to your music<3  I was hoping that maybe one day I could direct a music video for you guys but I guess I lost my chance. Well I hope I'll get to meet you guys at least, one day. Farewell Bright Light Fever I'll always be a true fan forever <33

You will be terribly missed bright light fever. you guys have been a very significant part of my journey through High School, growing up, music, writing, etc. i can still remember when i first saw you play in Diamond Springs in the summer of 2004. i was about to start high school, and i was forever changed by girls with guns( HAHA STILL LOVE THAT SONG). after that i felt compelled to go to as many shows as possible. I even got the chance to play a show with you guys back when i was in a band With Becka Cowper. I will never forget you guys and the beautiful music you guys created. thanks for being so wonderful, and talented, and kind enough to share your gifts.
love you guys.

Love,
Lindsey Waldon.

You guys rocked placerville for awhile, the best three piece band I've seen, certain for success i was sure. And then you guys left, and didnt come back. What happened? I wouldve liked to have seen where the placerville three piece BLF wouldve gone had it remained here and there. we enjoyed that raucous shit thoroughly. J.King

every time im reminded that Bright Light Fever is done i feel terrible.
you guys will always be my favorite band and the most influential to me.
first song i ever heard was Mother Mary Blues on Pandora radio about a year ago.
amazing.
at that moment my music taste was changed drastically.
i always describe your sound to people as "like if you ate licorice your whole life...and then ate a salt and vinegar chip...the initial reaction will be 'WTF thats different.' and then 'give me some more!'
:)
that was always the easiest way for me.

please keep us updated on your future exploits....id be very interested in any band with any BLF members in it.

I don't know how enthusiasm for the band could possibly have waned considering your music continued to grow in gloriousness as time went on, but I can assure you that my enjoyment and appreciation of it has remained strong throughout your tenure, and for good reason.

Modern music generally doesn't interest me.  I don't even bother to explore it under the assumption that the majority of it is crap {inarguable?}  But a friend of mine was interning for Universal and once handed me a bag of random albums.  The Evening Owl was in it, and shortly thereafter, we drove from San Diego to Los Angeles to see you perform at Spaceland.  I was blown away by your outstanding performance, and you delightedly exceeded my expectations.   I unashamedly asked each of you to sign my album, which you did rather graciously, and I now have a cherished memoir in both my mind and hands.

I truly loved your work.  I even wanted you to play my wedding someday, however bleak the possibility is of me ever finding someone weird enough to complement me.  I wanted my first dance to be to "Crowded Street In May," my personal favourite.  {It was either that or "Girlfriend in a Coma" by The Smiths.  I find songs about life support to be the ultimate in romantic.}

When I saw you perform again years later, it was for a woefully small crowd, but the modest audience did not keep you from putting on a truly incredible show.  Seeing and hearing you reminded me of how I became such a fan in the first place.  I was transfixed by the tableau, just as I had been while listening to the album for the very first time and every song since then.

I'm more than merely sad to see it all end, and I haven't taken the news well, but I feel fortunate for having experienced you at all.  Your songs have truly been a soundtrack to my life these past few years, bringing me immense pleasure and a surprising sense of comfort.  You managed to reach someone who is otherwise immune to modern music and virtually invisible to contemporary culture.  Aside from being excellent artists, you are all good people whom I have enjoyed getting to know.  Matt is the member that I know the best, and he is certainly one of the nicest, most interesting and most talented people I've met in ages.  I've also never seen anyone work so hard for their band as he has, and that genuinely impressed me.

I look forward to all of the projects you're sure to launch in the future, and I hope that you'll keep me in the loop in regards to them and you as people.

Rest in peace, not in pieces,

Deana

I am really saddened by this. I truly believe BLF had a lot of potential to make it big in the indie world. :'(

That was bitter sweet as well as flat out bitter. Perfectly fitting for a most unfortunate fate. Rip blf. You will be missed. Sorry I can be associated with the waning. At least "knew all the words."

Your music, in my eyes, was very unique. The feeling and energy I got from listening to your music could not have been duplicated by any other band I listen to. I miss you guys already.
