This month we will be reading the title of a book written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (a man). Once you have read the title, feel free to discuss.

title: "One Hundred Years Of Solitude"

Discussion starter: This title seems kinda long to me. Yet, in a way, it leaves me wanting more.

If the book is half as long as the title - it will be a very long One Hundred Years.

It sounds like a sleeper. I think it needs more action. Maybe toss in an action verb. Perhaps "Biting my Tongue for a Century" would work better.

A hundred years seems kind of long.  It is definitely longer than one year but not nearly as long as a thousand years or a million years.

Solitude seems a bit lonely to me.

A hundred years of solitude?  That's pretty rough.

What about the book "A Curious Inceident of the Dog in the Night-Time?"

Its a title so long you could sell it on ebay.

It doesn't sound very zippy, does it?

I've actually read that book. It was very good. You wouldn't know that from the title, however.

You said, "...seems kinda long to me. Yet, in a way, it leaves me wanting more."

I say, "That's what she said!"

The title suggests that this is not about a person, becuase if it was, it would be pretty hard to live alone for one hundred years.

This title absolutely changed my life!  It's a must read!  Gabriel (that man) is a genius!  His expert use of the word "solitude" truly reveals his ability to touch on sensitive issues without alienating the reader.

I highly recommend this book title to everyone wanting to get back in touch with their inner hermit.  Spend the two seconds, it's so worth it.

I feel like a fraud.

I only watched the movie version of the title.

They changed it a bit from the book version.

It was called One Hundred Years of War and Steamy Sex.

And they gave it a happy ending.

OK, well, first off, is the OneHundered Years of Solitude for a PERSON? Because i am sorry, unless you are Moses, Bea Arthur or Wolverine from the X-Men (his mutation makes him, uh...it's like a healing factor, so...so, like, he is actually , you know, OLDER than the other guys...cause of...cause of his healing factor thing......just..just ages him, you know...slower or something), then there is no WAY your solitude will last 100 years. You'll be dead. even if yer taken at zero-years-old, someone has to come and fed you to keep u alive for the 100 years, then BAM, no more solitude. So, maybe the book is about something inanimate....like a cup. A cup could go that long with solitude. But for crying out loud, how do you expect me to read a big book about a lonely cup? How does it even get made? ya know? who...who 'greenlit' that?...'lonely cup...just..just a cup...all by itself....interesting....should be good'. They'll publish anythng now. rubbish. reeeeal rubbish.

One Hundred Years of Solitude? I've read that - It's all about this guy Clark who crashes his spaceship on earth and sets up his house (in what some might call a "fortress") far, far, away from humanity. This is his own personal place to "think" and get away from it all. At one point he breaks this self-imposed "solitude" by bringing his girlfriend there, and because he decides to marry her, he loses all that made him who he was. In order to fix it, he runs so fast that time goes backwards and he corrects the decision he made to break the solitude and goes back to his happy life.

I think they are making another movie about this guy's life (they have four already, one even with Richard Pryor in it) that is due out this summer. But hey, what do I know?

By the way, Michael Scott is a donkey...HR rocks!

Actually - i have it on good authority that this guy didn't run so fast that time goes backwards, but that he "flew" so fast....geesh...talk about your pie in the sky books.

Some suggestions for your next book title club entry:

"High Fidelity"

"All The King's Men"

"The 1986 Buick Century Owner's Manuel"

"Who Moved My Cheese? Seriously, What the Hell!"

"Michael Scott's Tales of Erotica"

A man wrote a book called a Hundred Years of Solitude... well, he must have a love affair with his palm... personally I think he's lost his grip on reality... I mean, a hundred years... no fun, no nookie from another... yes, he's got a narcissistic love affair with his own hand for sure.

But it's not, so we should all feel relieved.

One Hundred Years of Solitude?  Best contemplated alone over a very, very long period of time.

Next book title club nominee:  "Much Ado About Nothing."  (My verdict: does not begin to live up to its enormous hype.)

I like how the author of this title uses "O" words 40% of the time. It demonstrates his fear of himself. Everyone knows that if you find yourself in the middle of an "O", of any form, you are never alone, because you have yourself, like it or not. If the title was "One Hundred Oreos of Solitude", then I would think differently.

Great disussion you have going on here, Paul.
