...seems way too important to be in Illinois.  This is a really major city in a state that is frankly not set up to handle it.

And why would anyone in their right mind want to live there anyways? When it's not Africa hot (summer) or Siberia cold (winter), you have to worry about being pissed on by R. Kelly...

I actually had a theory that Chicago was Metropolis. Superman is a mid-western raised guy...why would he move to NY? Gotham City is NY. Metropolis is Chicago.

There seems to be a discrepency about location of Metropolis and I happen to come by that news link today. Metropolis is at the very Southern tip of Illinois, a couple of hours away from Nashville and bout an hour from Carbondale, Il (SIU), I completely agree that Chicago is misplaced, but we need it, Metropolis area is like hicksville and there are poor uneducated elephant farmers who blame government for everything. And they hate Chicaga fer it!! Since your head is stuck in Kansas...perhaps you are mixing it up with the Wizard of Oz?

That's how I've always felt about Montreal being in Quebec. ('Cept Quebec is a province... I'm sure you can draw the parallel.)

At least Illinois isn't full of French people.

I've always thought this too. Who dictated this, do you think? When you fly in there, you realize that this city is in the middle of nowhere, and without air travel, it would truly be unreachable.

Before air travel, who was the genius who said, "I'm gonna start a gigantic city halfway between the coasts and too far north to be warm?"

Boston, New York, Montreal and DC should absorb it, I think.

I believe that Chicago exists within Illinois for a couple of reasons:

It means I can live somewhere with low cost of living, but still catch a good show on a weeknight AND make it to work in the morning.

It gives the Red staters down here something to complain about every election day as I smugly sit by knowing that all of their votes were cancelled out.

The guy that I'm dating had to move to Chicago for work.  I'm in California and afraid of airplanes.  We've since had conversations about moving Chicago to Nevada, along with Lake Michigan because Nevada kind of needs a big lake, right?  Who's with me!?

I agree. I live in "the 'burbs" which are apparently another world to some people, but all we have is Chicago. It makes up for the rest of the state being lack-luster corn fields. Maybe we aren't set-up to handle it, but we certainly enjoy having it!

Here's the thing though, as a liberal from central Illinois now living in Chicago, I can sleep at night knowing that everyone south of I-80 can vote however they want, Chicago will cancel them out and we'll always end up Democrat. If Chicago was its own state, Illinois would bring about a new set of Republican electoral votes, and we just can't have that happening.

You should listen to Stejan Stephens 2 Illinois albums.

Also, Chicago was nothing but a speck on the map when banks in the southern part of the state lent money to the new town to help it out.

Chicago's an amazing city.  Illinois is a great state.  I'm not sure how the state isn't "set up to handle" Chicago, since the whole state revolves around Chicago.  Maybe in 5 months you'll post something which will explain this statement more.

No, no, no I live here and I know exactly what he's talking about.  Outside Chicago and the surrounding burbs it's like another country.  You go from the heart of civilization to 200 miles of corn farms in every direction.

Sometimes I feel for some redneck beet farmer in Southern IL who gets his taxes raised cause we need to fix potholes in Chicago.  Then I remember:  I hate beets and I also hate potholes.  So it's win-win.

That's what you were talking about right?

the whole of illinois grew out of chicago. when french settlers came to the illinois territory in the late 1600's, they settled near the present border of missouri and illinois, close to st louis. the paducah settlement. in later years, settlers would come across lake michigan and settle in present day chicago. these two stops became major trade route in illinois, prompting for other towns to pop up between them. chicago was no more than a large marsh when the first settlers came, and had to be drained in order to establish a livable community. later on, chicago grew in popularity because of its location next to the lake, and the high influx of immigrants settling there. it became a core city, highly populated, and prompted surrounding towns to act as their suppliers (grains, corn, dairy, vegetables, meat). chicago couldnt have made it without the rest of illinois, because it couldnt have been able to sustain its growing popularity if it hadnt had the surrounding resources (and their cities!!!). this is no longer as applicable as it once was, but chicago continues to grow because of the surrounding suburbs and the influx of customer service related jobs that are now primary in much of the city (which a large number of commuters drive everyday on a crappy interstate for..).
in conclusion, chicago is a pretty great city, but it didnt become that way on its own.
sorry, im a history major. in illinois.
