Category: Life

As many of you know, Aspen comics CEO, creator of Witchblade, Fathom, and Soulfire, and all around inspiring artistic talent Michael Turner died this weekend after a very long and courageous battle with cancer. Like many, this news came as a tremendous shock Saturday morning because despite the toll the disease had taken on him over the years, the guy always appeared to be healthier looking, more fit and tan, and just happier and more energetic than the rest of us at comic book shows. I truly believed he would outlive us all.

Many might be surprised to know that despite our very similar paths in life, I didn't really know Mike all that well. Sure, we spoke on the phone several times over the years, exchanged pin-ups and covers for each other's creator owned projects, and even came very close to being partners in the original Cliffhanger comics line-up in the late 90's along with Joe Mad and Humberto Ramos. But in the end, we just remained acquaintances, sharing pleasantries at conventions like passing ships in the night and catching up on each-other's goings on through mutual friends and colleagues. Which is why I'm a little startled at how much his passing is affecting me today. Perhaps it's because of those intertwined paths.

You see, we both broke into comics, Image Comics, around the same time and around similar ages in the early 90's. I joined up with Jim Lee's Wildstorm studios, he joined up with Marc Silvestri's Top Cow. I was fortunate enough to have break-out success with Gen 13, he had breakout success with Witchblade. We also both seemed to simultaneously garner a mutual reputation for drawing sexy women in what would be defined as the "Image style", and seemed to be constantly linked and compared with each-other around this same time. later we both broke away to create our own very successful comic book sensations, Fathom and Danger Girl. Like I said, we just seemed to be linked in some sort of strange cosmic way, like brothers in comic-dom. Constantly competing with each others success, and ultimately, becoming much better craftsmen from that spirited competitiveness. bottom line, I think we made each other better artists.

When I first met Mike, I'll be 100% honest, I don't think we clicked. He seemed to be a bit arrogant to me, perhaps a bit full of himself for my taste. He just seemed to be good at everything and would make sure you knew it. But as the years went on I began to realize that I had Mike all wrong. He wasn't arrogant at all, he just had a lust for life. He lived life to the absolute fullest. No day, no time was wasted. The guy wasn't only a comic book artist, but an avid skier, a scuba diver, a trained martial artist, the list goes on and on. And what may have initially seemed like him being full of himself was really just an intense drive to be the best at what he could be. It goes without saying that the guy wanted to take on the world. Not only constantly taking risks with new creation after new creation but having the balls to create his very own comic book company. Trust me, you need to have a healthy ego to succeed in this business. You have to believe in yourself more than anybody, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and Mike just really and truly believed in what he was doing.

I didn't know Mike Turner as well as I wish I had, but his life is a real inspiration to me and will continue to be. He's taught me not to let the "bad" in life get you down, and to pursue your goals and your dreams no matter what obstacles life throws in your way. And most importantly, to get outdoors, breathe in the fresh air and live every day to the fullest because everyday is a gift to be cherished.

You will be missed Mike.

I can't take it. I'm heartbroken. He was always very kind to me at shows, and super supportive. I will miss him greatly.

That dynamic between the two of you always fascinated me. I could see how awesome that would be to have someone on the other side challenging you every step of the way. I bet you'll miss that. I am grateful to have known him.

Sad news indeed ...

Too many of our small family are passing on , I only met our talented Mr Turner a couple of times and was amazed at his focus and determination I wish I had got the opportunity to have known him more.

my regards and love go out to his family and friends.

I bet Mike Dave C and Ringo are propping up the bar at Kirby's bar and Grill east Heaven. shooting the breeze
with all the other greats who left their legacy and Boots for us to fill.

lets make sure we look after those still with us and support the Hero initiative guys.

As you were a inspiration to me, so was Mike. But we can all be inspired by his life as well as his art for he lived it to the fullest.
I met Mike a few years back and he was as cool as one can be and offered me my 1st pin-up gig. He always had a smile on his face and kept it on till the end. so for now on i am inspired by his life. Yeah he was a great artist but he was a greater person.

Rest well, Mike.

Very touching tribute, Jeff. I met Michael at last year's con in Baltimore and it was amazing how high in spirits he was and also how truly friendly he was to each fan each though it was obvious he wasn't feeling the best that day.

although i never had a chance to formally meet mike at a convention, i did catch a glimpse of him at the aspen booth at one of the cons i've been to. his work, his life, has always been an inspiration to me. to see someone not give a damn in the world, to continue living life the way he wanted, shows that u should never, ever let anything get in the way of the things u want to do in life. along with u, joe mad, jim lee and mike turner, u 4 have always been a great inspiration to me when i draw. i followed comics that had any of the 4 of u either on the covers or the interior. to find out this news has been quite a downer for me. it's quite sad that so many greats have gone, but their spirit lives on in their art. even though michael turner has passed, what he's left us will continue to live on. RIP mike...

While I'm not a huge fan of his art, I can't put the guy down for doing what he loved in life. He was always approachable and greeted with a smile.

Still finding it hard to believe and accept. He truly was an outstanding inspiration to all, whether people liked his art or not. He was truly a great example of what JSC had just mentioned. At times it was a bit hard to read about what he was going through with his cancer over at the Aspen boards.

A really great blog JSC. Very well said.

I had never been able to meet MLT in person but have seen him couple times at SDCC from a distance and from all the positive comments I keep reading and hearing about from fellow fans, he really was a genuine soul that fans just wanted to meet.

Even as I write these lines I still cannot conceive in my mind that Mike is gone. The desk where I am sitting now writing these lines is decorated with his Fathom statue sitting on my right, a poster of his artwork on my left, a handful of his Soulfire comics right next to the statue and his first fathom figure signed by him when I got to meet him for the first time. I, alike the many artist that had the luxury to meet him in person and who were touched by his talent and inspired to create will miss him terribly. I feel empty inside . . . I grew up wanting to feel in his shoes, as well as your's Jeff. You guys here huge in the wilderness of my creative mind and whenever the muse seemed to abandoned me, it was through your works that I found light . . . I found life . . . I found inspiration. Mike, indeed will be missed . . . the world of comics will not be the same. Pages that once brought me a smile and inspiration now leave me with tears and a strong will to go on. I am a cancer survivor and I know how tough of a battle that is . . . not just an amazing talented artist, but a warm, caring, friendly soul and a hero in a level that many of us will never know. R.I.P my inspiration . . . EOS.-

X MIKE

Cosa avrebbe detto?

La mia ispirazione era lui.

Torna in mente quel suo primo disegno,
il cuore batte forte…
… nacque una passione!

Torna in quella firma,
il mio cuore si ferma…
… nacque un amore!

Ti ringrazio di quello che mi hai regalato
Ti ringrazio della passione che mi hai trasmesso.

Non ti dimenticherò mai, Mike!

your analysis of the link between you is perfect.. as a young teenager I looked at the work of both of you as a model to follow... the first runs I began to book at my local comic shop has been wildcats, the darkness, witchblade e gen 13... then danger girl and fathom, soulfire and wildsizers... none of these two has been completed at the moment and one will never be... not in the same way, not with the awesome pages of mike... I'll miss his art... the comicdom has lost one shiny star.... so sad...

Jeff,

I had the pleasure to meet both you and Michael Turner in the same day at Wizard World LA back in 2006.

You can see the pics of us meeting here

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs10/i/2006/078/1/1/SNDQ_at_Wizardworld_LA_by_valaryc.jpg

I just wanted to say that at that point I had only known Michael from reputation but the man just oozed confidence and generosity with his time. He had legions of comic book fans standing in line for him to sign their books, and some of them wanted 20+ books signed by him. Michael just smiled and talked while signing away. He never complained, he never tried to sneak away, he never blew anyone off. He was just one of the most kind and approachable comic book icons I've ever have the pleasure of meeting face to face.

A real class act with so much talent you see his style emulated everywhere you look in comics these days. I remember when we discussed the brand new Batman vs Superman line that had just came out and how weird Supergirl was translated into an action figure with eyes that were far too large for his liking.

My impression with meeting comic artists, especially high profile ones such as yourself, Jim Lee, and Michael was always a nervous one. Would I come across too much like a geek? Would you listen to what I said? Could I even talk straight? I'm shy by nature but Michael was just so fan friendly and open to listening about how much his work either inspired you or just overall appreciation.

Not only did he sign three books I had picked out for him to sign specifically, he insisted on signing the ENTIRE stack of like 20, plus he even signed my badge for me! I mean how awesome is that? I didn't have to ask he just went ahead and did it.

He even personalized my copy of Witchblade 1! I have to say as far as comic book experiences go, meeting you and Michael at the same Con was just...mindblowing.

I feel in love with Michael's Witchblade art way back in the day and that one iconic swimsuit shot of Sarah laying on the beach in the brown earthtones is still a poster that has in itself become a symbol of Michael's passion for his work.

This one here

http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.tang/WebsiteWall/Witchblade2.jpg

I don't want to ramble on and on but I would just like to say thank you for being such a class act and that meeting both you and Michael will remain one of my most treasured memories. Both of you have enormous talent with a unique style that can never be forgotten or duplicated. Thank you so much for sharing your artistic prowess with the world.

Jeff you continue to be a inspiration to all us comic book fans out there who dream of being something more. You've achieved a status few have in this world...you and Michael have both immortalized yourself and made a difference in the world of enertainment that will continue to live on for generations to come.

Thank you for Danger Girl, thank you for your inspirational covers, and thank you for just being an all around cool guy to meet. If I would say one thing to Michael Turner right now up there at the pearly gates surrounded by big breasts, scantally clad angles it would just be four simple words.

"Thank you for everything."

RIP Michael, you will be missed.

Thanks for your sincere words and honest expression of your connection with Mike.
I so admire how even when sick Mike kept producing, and his volume of work he churned out during his career speaks to his proficiency. He was a true artist. I found him most impressive just watching him sketch at the Pittsburgh con that he always attended. I will miss his work, and his presence.
Personally this is heartbreaking and sort of horrific for such a young vibrant energy to be taken away.
