Current mood:  blank
I was at the studio yesterday and this kid was asking questions about sampling. He wasn't so much curious about how you get them cleared and stuff like that, he wanted to know if all samples were indeed samples to start with. ????

Well he gave an example to help us understand what he was asking. "You know how a lot of people sample the Isley Brothers "In Between The Sheets", well didn't they (the Isley Bros.) sample that sound too? BLEW MY MIND! He went on to ask, "Well where did they get the sound from? Trying not to cry, I said "they used real instruments... it's an entire song". He responded " So before they made the song, that sound was never used before? We told him no, they wrote the SONG! He looked for a while and said " So that (again) sound was never used before that? Us:  "No!" The kid: "EVER?" My man Hoffa went on to explain to him that before all of the computer generated, digital music people played all of the instruments LIVE and wrote the songs from scratch. I don't think he understood but he left alone and I went almost out of my mind.

This is a direct result of them removing music classes from the schools. Not all kids have families with musicians in them or have parents old enough to know what band is. Let alone expose them to raw music. I grew up with bands in the basement and stuff like that. Not to mention, the Isley Bros. were all the rage when I was growin up. I was in jazz band, had a rap demo, all that kind of stuff. My oldest brother was the dj at allllll of our parties and block parties! So I am struggling with the idea that this poor kid has no idea where or how music begins.

People, there are children running around not knowing what music IS!

Let us pray........

Great point Dozi... I'm not sure how old this kid is and I think his questions are valid and he should seek answers. That's commendable... What raises more of a brow for me is why does he think everything he hears is sampled - unless everything he hears is sampled? If so - this proves his window of music exposure.
(He's living in an MTV box)

It sounds more to me like he doesn't understand what an instrument is or even a band and he has to be less than 10 to think it all generates from a computer. He should continue to ask questions and if music is really of his essence - he'll study it and grow to appreciate its foundation as well as its evolution.

Just think how lost kids born today will be in regard to the foundation of music... and as music continues to evolve - they will always be introduced to their 'here and now' - just as we were under the same exposure when we first met music. So it's all the same - just different times. They just have to study it to know the the roots... if it matters to them.

Great post!

Bring music back to the schools dammit!! Thankfully, public schools had music programs at the time (1994-1996), then I took it to the next level (private lessons, minor in college). Not to mention, I DJ part-time. I do shed tears for kids wanting to do music, but don't know where to go or think that music programs are regionally or financially out of reach. We, as a community need to find a solution.

Music in the schools is more important than people know. Unfortunately the ones who can do something about it, don't care ENOUGH.

Amen Dozi.

I honestly would've passed out had a kid came at me with that but in the act of giving the kid credit at least he/she seems to have enough curiosity to want to know about music to ask those kinds of questions therefore he/she may be safe from the blinding of uneducated millions of kids who have no idea where music comes from.

I love samples and sampling in general but I try as much as possible to make all my music original so that maybe one day I can be sampled (does that make sense?)

It's sad to see so many kids and even grown ups running around without a clue to what real music is and this is why I support bands like Mint Condition and The Roots... My daughters will know where real music comes from if I never teach them anything else!!

Great Blog Dozi

I feel the same way about original music. I try to create from scratch as much as possible. My true feelings and thoughts are better expressed that way.

Besides, I'll feel better when my stuff is what's being sampled!! I feel you on that one.
