Passing Gay People Are Legit, Too
In writing the Mix Tapes Legitimate blog post, I remembered another conversation I had earlier this week with someone who worked at my school. This person is queer and we are both considered passing meaning that we pass for straight.
Passing was historically used to refer to "mulatto" people who passed for white when they were "Black" according to the "one drop of black blood" standard. (That meant that if a mixed person had Black parents somewhere along there line--even going back to great, great, great, great, great, great, grand parent [1/32]--that mixed person would be considered Black)
I was talking about the fact that we have passing power and how that is a great power to have. She, the staff member at my school, said that it is not always great because you have to be subjected to conversations where people say some horrible things about gay people because they don't know your gay. She also said it gets tiring to have people not notice your identity.
I said to her that what is great about it is that I can be my own advocate.
Because my look--a straight girl look--is legitimated in this heteronormative society (a society where heterosexual are thought to be the norm or what's normal), I can infiltrate those circles and change and challenge their concepts of what gay or queer is supposed to look and act like.
I am, generally, for using one's power in order to be an advocate and/or ally for marginalized groups.
Ya infiltrate da system to change it is a underutilized revolutionary strategy.
So all my passing people unite and infiltrate!!!!
SITY, sittin pretty ova ya whole committee, WHAT!!!
