American spending is $760 billion short of amount needed for a full employment economy. (Economist Oct. 3) NY Times economist Jack Krugman says stimulus (about 800 billion)was half the size needed. States are laying off public employees and cutting vital services. Connect the dots, anyone?

actually I am a bit dense on what youre saying..How i interpret is..Where's the 800 billion stimulus? cuz it doesnt seem to have trickled down to us lowly workerbees..If spending is this low..I hope it means folks arent going into debt but I think thats unlikely. I always liked connect the dots..but I might need your help on this one ;)

Most of the stimulus was in  tax cuts--some not very stimulative in the short run. Many economists, including Krugman think it should have been twice as large. Here in Iowa, as most states it went to road repairs and such, and not necessarily to patch up public services that states can't pay for, since only the federal government can run on fiat money. One example, we alloted 8 billion for high speed rail in the U.S. In Spain, they are spending 50 billion. And talk about China, they are building high speed rail all over the place.
