Illumina, a new work by Farr is to premiere at the Christchurch Arts Festival 2009 with Helen Charlton (soprano soloist), Grant Hutchinson (director) and the Jubilate Singers at Christchurch Cathedral on the Square, Christchurch, NZ, 8 August 2009.

Grant Hutchinson and the Jubilate Singers commissioned Gareth Farr to compose Illumina for their presentation ‘Illumina – Music of Light.’ This premiere performance will feature alongside others comprising eleven centuries of choral music.

Farr’s new work Illumina uses text by two New Zealand poets: ‘Soft leaf falls of Light’ by Apirana Taylor and ‘Light’ by Jenny Bornholdt. Taylor is published and performs internationally as a Maori poet, story-teller, playwright, novelist, actor, painter and musician. Bornholdt is an award-winning poet and anthologist, notably having received an Arts Foundation Arts Laureate Award in 2003 and becoming the fifth Te Mata Estate New Zealand Poet Laureate in 2005.
