Dame Evelyn Glennie is to first perform Christos Hatzis’ new concerto for vibraphone, cloud gongs & string orchestra, Mirage? with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anne Manson at Westminster Church, Winnipeg, Canada on 9 September 2009. Glennie and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra are to take this on tour through Western Canada with ten further performances, including Vancouver, Edmonton and Brandon among the stops.
Mirage? was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for Glennie and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Describing his influences in writing this work, Hatzis points to questions about the way of living that preceded the current economic downturn, and echo the ‘roaring twenties’ and the Great Depression of the 1930s. The work draws from musical styles of the 1920s. Hatzis notes: ‘Mirage? is permeated by a sense of sadness, and at one point, of despair. It is lamenting the loss of something pleasurable that could not be held on to; a way of living.’
Glennie comments that playing Mirage? has been ‘enjoyable,’ and describes it as ‘truly very beautiful.’
