Get your wallet and take a bill out. Any bill, it dont matter what. Now look at it and find where it says, "In God We Trust". You see it? On July 30, 1956, a law was passed by the 84th United States Congress (P.L. 84-140) and approved by President Dwight D. Eisenhower declaring "In God We Trust" the national motto of the United States. It seems like it was real important to let people know that we as a country put our trust in God when it concerned matters of this country.
Well that was 1956. Where do we stand today?
I found a letter written by the President on the White House website that ended with this to say, "NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim July 30, 2006, as the 50th Anniversary of our National Motto, "In God We Trust." I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities."
It seems to be pretty important to this country still today, huh?
Where am I going with this?
One of my favorite t-shirt sayings is, "Man made beer. God made pot. Who do you trust?" Well if you put belief and faith in the Bible, it says: "It is better to trust the LORD than to put confidence in mortal man." (Psalm 118:8) And American history demonstrates repeatedly that the nation was founded on Christian principles and its founding fathers wished to acknowledge that fact all over Washington D.C. by putting it on buildings, in official documents, and historical speeches. Less than a hundred years after the Declaration of Independence, "In God We Trust" was proclaimed on its coins. America is a free nation, a nation founded on Christian principles. President Thomas Jefferson wrote, "The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time." and asked 'Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are of God?"
Are you getting confused, yet?
So am I.
I'm not trying to make some kind of sermon here, just trying to make sense of the very contradictory belief system that our country bases itself on. If we do in fact put our trust in God, shouldnt we trust in him for ALL matters.
In the very beginning the bible says "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth.…To you it will be for meat." … And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:29-31) Wait! I got more! "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb, have I given you all things." (Gen 9:3) That one is for all you people that say Cannabis comes from the devil.
In God we trust, right?
Prohibition. That one word says so much. Did you know that the Bible even speaks about prohibition of this wonderful plant, calling those who prohibit it hypocratic liers. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall… speak lies in hypocrisy… commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by them which believe and know the truth. (1 Timothy 4:1-3)
Back to the t-shirt. "Man made beer. God made pot. Who do you trust?" In God, right? It's what we've been taught. It's our NATIONAL MOTTO! I was always taught, "If your going to do something or say something, man up to it. Don't say one thing and do another."
"I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen anymore." (Ezekiel 34:29)
"On either side of the river, was there, the tree of life... and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." (Revelations 22:1-2)
